I have upgraded to OSX 10.3.9 and needed to install my Brother 1270N laser printer using the BRXhlmcups3c installer supplied by Brothers website for OSX 10.3.

I am not used to using cups for printing but I followed the instructions:

"For Network Users:

Switch off and unplug the product from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your Macintosh if you already connected an interface cable.
Turn on your Macintosh.
Connect the network interface cable to the product, and then connect it to a free port on your hub.
Turn on the product by plugging in the power cord. Turn the power switch on.
Open the ”Printer Setup Utility”. “Printer Setup Utility” can be found in /Applications/Utilities.
Click Add Printer…
Select "IP Printing".
Select "LPD/LPR" from the "Printer Type" list.
Enter the TCP/IP Address(or DNS Name) of the printer into the "Printer Address" box.
Select "Brother" from the "Printer Model" list.
Select your printer model's CUPS driver from "Model Name" list.
The name of CUPS driver is "model name + CUPS.gz".
Click Add. The printer will be available from the "Printer List".
Select Quit from the menu.
The setup is now complete."

Now when I print I select this printer and observe the printer server. It looks up the address which is the same as that I used in OSX 10.2.8 but doesn't seem to be able to find the printer.

I have unplugged the printer both from the power and the network and replugged to no avail.

What happened to Plug & Play?

Or is that a Windows only feature now? s:-)

Any thoughts?

Try this and see if it helps,

Make sure printer is on and online while you do this.
Go to Brother website,
-click on downloads
-select driver downloads
-unstuff drivers
reboot
Go to printer utilities
-choose IP Printing
-enter printer address
-choose Brother from Printer Model, select driver and your printer should appear once you add.

Since this is a network printer plug and play does not apply.

I hope this is helps you

I've done as you suggested.

I have a choice of 2 drivers:

1. Brother HL-1270N series CUPS.gz

Which I used as instructed to set up using "LPD/LPR". With that the job entered the queue but could not find the printer which is at 192.168.0.10

2. Brother HL-1270N BR - Script2

Which I used following your instructions, because this is NOT CUPS right?, to connect with IP Printing. I do not even see the job entering the printing queue. I tried another version also using IPP with the CUPS driver just to test and it also does not enter the queue.

I was being extremely sarcastic about Plug and Play. Apple has now made connecting a printer WORSE than with Windows, whilst simultaneously offering no guidance or documentation that I can find.

I am wondering what else they will have done in Tiger to stuff things up.

Sorry, I hate this and see it as so unnecessary, but thank you very much for your assistance.
