TICKET ARCHIVE -> Installing Classic Alongside Os 10.4.2

I did an erase and install of OS 10.4, and have since upgraded to 10.4.2. I now wish to add Classic.

I have installed Classic, and have a 'System Folder' together with 'Applications (mac OS 9}' Folder in Hard Drive/Applications.

Trouble is, Classic will not open as computer can't find the System Folder. When I open System Preferences/Classic nothing is shown in the 'box', it is completely empty.

If I attempt to start up Classic from the icon on the title bar, I get an error message "Classic cannot find a MAC OS 9 system on the startup disk to use"

My computer is an e-mac about 14 months old. It originally shipped with OS 10.3 and Classic. Alas now lost. There is plenty of RAM.

Any suggestions welcome!

In your 'System Folder' there must be a few required items. Open your System Folder, and check that these exist:
System
Finder
Mac OS ROM
System Resources

The first two make the System Folder (and OS 9) function, and the last two provide system support info for OS 9.
There should also be a variety of other folders, like Control Panels, and Extensions. Control Panels may have a dozen or so items, Extensions usually should have more than 100 items.
Your System Folder should consist of around 12 folders, with other assorted files about a dozen more.

Open you Disk Utility, click on your drive to select it, and go to the File menu and choose Repair OS 9 Permissions.
AND, open your System Folder, drag the Finder file to your desktop, wait a few seconds, and drag it back into the System Folder. This serves the purpose of re-blessing the System Folder.
Restart your Mac, then open System Preferences/Classic pane. Does it show a System Folder now?

Hi Dale, thanks for responding. All the files and folders you mentioned are present in the System Folder. 11 files and 17 folders.
I opened Disk Utility, clicked on hard drive and went to File Menu, but 'Fix OS 9 permissions was grayed out. So no go I'm afraid.

By the way when the computer was booting up from Restart I got a flashing 'world' icon. I double clicked and it changed to a flashing '?' mark. I doubled clicked again and the Restart continued as normal.

I have a suspicion that Tiger isn't as stable as Panther.

The flashing world means that you need to select the startup disk - in your startup disk pref pane.

Did you try the various other tasks that I suggested?

Have you tried repairing permissions through Disk Utility?
After doing the other items. restart. Can you now see the system folder in your Classic pref pane?

Tiger, I think, is better than your experience so far.

Since you first advised, I have:
1. Checked contents of System Folder. All O.K.

2. Attempted to repair OS 9 permissions without success.

3. Opened System Folder, dragged Finder to desktop, waited, and dragged it back.

4. Restarted.

5. Checked Classic pref pane. No change. ( It says, 'Loading System folder information', but nothing appears even after an extended wait)

6. Repaired OSX permissions.

7. Opened 'Startup Disk', and selected 'Hard Drive'.

8. Repeated step 3. above.

9. Restarted. No flashing symbols this time.

10. Repeated step 5. above. Same result.

Oh dear!

I re-read your first post, not sure how I missed it. You stated that you have the System Folder and the Applications (MacOS 9) folder, both inside the Applications folder ??

If so, try dragging both of these to your hard drive, so both folders are at the root of the drive. You want to see Applications, and Applications (Mac OS 9), System, and System Folder all in the same directory (along with Library, and Users, and the others that you might have there.)
That's the correct place for all these folders, and may let it all work now.

I have no other easy options for you.. except for dumping the OS 9 stuff completely, and trying again.

Hi Dale, Earlier problem is solved, I've now got OS 9 installed successfully and applications running on classic. The only thing is it doesn't open automatically when needed but is fine when I start it manually. Not a big problem really.

How did I fix OS 9 not loading? I found that the Hard drive had been formatted in Unix and not as recommended, in Mac Extended (journaled). An erase and install of OSX and correct formatting has sorted things out.........until I wanted to replace my photo files from a CD backup. No sign of application I-Photo.

In case there was a glitch in my brand new OSX system, I have carried out an archive and install, but still no I-Photo.
Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Chris.

iPhoto is not included with OS X 10.4.x Tiger. You can install an older version from a Panther installer, or your restore disk that shipped with your system. If you want version 5 of iPhoto, that is included when purchasing iLife '05 software.
