I've been trying to install my HP Laserjet 2100m in my MacBook G4 running MAC OS 10.4.8. using ethernet
The printer has installed a HP JetDirect card J313A
I'm using a Asante FriendlyNet ethernet hub.
In the Printer Browser window I have selected "HP Jet Direct - Socket", then under Print Using I've selected "HP" then click "Add", but then I receive a message saying error "-50"
If in the Address field type the Printer IP Address (15.75.191.53) then under Print Using appear using Generic "PostScript Printer". Or I've selected "HP" and then from the pop up menu HP LaserJet 2100 series. From there select the printer memory "36mb or more" and click continue
When I try to print a message appears saying "Attempting to connect to host 15.75.191.53 on port 9100 and after few minutes "Unable to connect to printer"
II've tried several combinations "More printers, AppleTalk, HP IP Printing", etc.
I've been looking around for a solution, but I just can find one, any clue guys?

Is that printer IP address in your local network (first three parts of IP address same)?

If not, maybe you will have better luck using appletalk for printing - click ADD in Printer Setup and then click Default Browser and wait for the printer to show up (up to 40 secs).

If appletalk is disabled in the Jetdirect card, then you'll need to change the IP address to be in your local net. That is easiest done with a PC and HP Jetadmin software.
Or, you can go to the Terminal and use telnet 15.75.191.53. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Speaking of the IP address, you got it by printing out a test page from the printer, right?

I've tried selecting Appletalk, clicking Default Browser and waited for several minutes, but nothing happens.
You're right, I got the printer's IP Address printing a test page and the JetDirect Configuration page shows : APPLETALK STATUS: DISABLED
In regards to the IP address being the same, all I can tell you is that I have just two computers, this MacBook and a Power G3 233mhz, that I haven't had the time to get it connected the G3. I'm not sure about the IP address of my MacBook, but I checked the Network Utility and in the Info tab shows:
Hardware utility (eng0)
Hardware address: 00:f2:34:23:41
IP address(es): 192:168:254:1 (I thinks this is the one)
About the Telnet, I dont know what it is, I've never used it before, how can I access it in my MacBook. How can I go to the Terminal that you mention.
After I received your reply I looked in the internet for Telnet and found and downloaded a SSH's sftp client called Fugu. I tried to use it using the printer's IP Address, but I couldn't connect to the printer to change the Appletalk status. I looked for HP Jetadmin and coulnd't find it in the HP website, it looks like there's only a windows version.
Thanks in advance for everything

OK, if the IP address is 192.168.1.254, in Printer Setup click Add > click IP printer (icon to the right of default browser) > select HP Jetdirect protocol > enter the IP address in the space for it > select printer model. Finish and try it.

The Terminal Utility is in the Applications > Utilities folder. To use telnet to change applatalk and IP address settings (if you want to, that is), type this:
telnet 192.168.1.254
You can get help with single entry of ?.

Good luck.

I tried what you said and didn't work.
Now, I'm confused the IP 192.168.1.254 is the one from my MacBook? because then the last two segements are inverted should be 254.1. I entered both combinations and still not working.
Honestly I have no idea how the Terminal works. I selected Remote Login (telnet) from the menu and then typed the IP address and clicked Connect.
Thanks for your patience

I guessed you had miss-typed the .254.1, because the .1 is nearly always the gateway (=router) address within a local network.

The way the Terminal works is - type something in after your name (like greg% in my Terminal), then the computer replies back. You need to type
telnet [put the printer IP address here] [and hit Return]

I finally was able to get the IP changed. A friend of mine was able to change it trhough a windows machine. After that he was able to print.
But then I picked it up and took it home and when I tried to print the printer's window says "attempting to connect to host 192.168.0.100 on port 9100. and after few minutes changes to "Unable to connect to printer (retrying in 30 seconds); Operation timed out"
I don't know what's happening.

If your computer is in the subnet 192.168.1.x and your printer is now in the subnet 192.168.0.x, then your computer knows the printer is "outside" the router and it is trying to go outside the router -- but the printer isn't outside the router.....
Did you enable appletalk so you could print that way?

Finally is printing. It was necessary to set the configure the IPv4 to "Manually". and enter the printer IP address..
Thanks for your help!
