TICKET ARCHIVE -> Installing Mac Os 9.2.1

I have just replaced the internal Hard drive in my blue and white G3 Powermac. I managed to startup from the System CD, initialize the HD and it is recognized. I installed 8.6 and then installed 9.2.1. I selected the new internal HD as the startup in the control panel. When I restart, the happy mac comes up but that's as far
as it will go. I also never hear a chime.
It also says that on this 40 gig HD, it used 4 gigs to load the system. That seems like a lot to me. I have a 350mghz processor and 1 Gig of Ram. I did install the 9.2.1 at first and then realized I needed to install the 8.6 first. Could this be part of the problem? I then dumped the first 9.2.1 and then installed 8.6 and then 9.2.1.

Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

Susan,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. When you installed OS 9, did you select Clean Install and install the OS 9 drivers?

First, let me explain that you did not need to install 8.6 first. The OS 9 CD would have installed correctly.

It could be that OS 9 does not like the Ram you have installed. Remove the extra ram, then start up with the OS 9 CD.

Before you click on the installer icon, go to the Utilities folder and select Disk First Aid. Have that scan the drive and repair any problems.

Now quit Disk Utility and open the hard drive. Check it to make sure you do not have two system folders. If you do, trash the 8.6 folder immediately.

Now start the installer. In the second screen, at the bottom is a box next to Perform Clean Install. Check that box.

Now follow the prompts. This will put a new system folder on your hard drive and name the old one previous system folder.

Let me know how you do.

OH Cheryl....

I just put in a second HD thinking the
first Western Digital defective (this is what Mac Zone suggested). This second Western Digital - I initialized with 2 partitions like Mac Zone suggested. The first partition was 7.5 Gigs and then the second the remaining 32 gigs. This was what tech support at MZ suggested.

I initialized the second "new" HD and then did a clean install of 9.2.1. At the end, I got error messages. First, it couldn't find Open Transport 2.0 for Remote Access. Then it just couldn't find the system file and so on.

I came back to my other computer to your suggestion of removing the Ram and running Disk First Aid. When I ran it from 9.2 on this most recent HD,it came up with problems that Disk First Aid could not fix for Untitled 1 (first partition) and Untitled 2, which just couldn't be mounted.

Errors as follows:

Untitled 1 - Problem: Keys out of order, 4, 33.
Disk First Aid cannot repair.

Untitled 2 - Problem: Volume header needs minor repair, 2.0.
Invalid extent entry, 3,0 Disk First Aid cannot repair them.

I decided to run 8.6 Disk First Aid to see what it would come up with. The errors were as follows:

Untitled 1 - Problem: Keys out of order, 4, 209
Disk First Aid cannot repair.

Untitled 2 - Problem: Mount check found minor errors. Volume Bit map needs minor repairs, 4, 139
Volume header needs minor repair, 1, 0

The HFS wrapper partition is damaged. You should make backup copies of your files, erase the volume and restore. The Volume Untitled 2 could not be mounted.

Thanks for your patience with this. My question to you is
does this sound like a hardware or software problem?
Since neither CD (8.6 or 9.2) want to load, I'm guessing
it's the Western Digital, but do you suggest another brand.
My Western Digital external works fine.

So much obliged for any insights you can give. If you are
at a loss, please give me any other suggestions other than shooting the CPU. I need it for design and I've been down tooo lonnnnggg! ;-)

Susan,

I do understand your frustration, especially when you need the computer to complete projects.

When Disk First Aid can not repair problems, it is time to use a third party utility. On your machine Norton Utilities (for OS 9) will work. {Norton utilities is not to be used on machines with OS X installed}. Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro (for OS 9) are also good utilities.

You will have to start up the computer using the CD (of either one of the above mentioned utilities) and have it scan and repair the drives.

When you formated the drives - did you use HFS + (Mac OS Extended)? That is a must on the large drives.

I am not sure if it is the Western Digital or not. I know that Maxtor works extremely well as an internal drive. That is what Apple puts in most of their models. I also have a Western Digital external with no problems.

And I have great respect for the Mac Zone techs.

Let me know how you do with the third party utility. {wishing I lived close by you}

Cheryl,

First, Thanks for replying so quickly every time I contact you. I am trying desperately to try everything before I bug you each time. I have gone back to the first new Western Digital HD I purchased. I started off of Tech Tool Pro and managed to get the whole system installed without an error message. However, I can't get past the "happy mac" at start up. I decided to run TTP again and I get these errors in the File Structure:

One or more damaged files were found on the volume during the File Structure Tests. The following damaged files were not repaired:
System Folder: Extensions: Sound Manager (I'll abbreviate now)
SF: Ext: QuickTime
SF: Ext: Software update Scheduler
SF: Control Panels: File Exchange
SF: CP: Extensions Manager
SF: System Resources
Applications (Mac OS 9) Apple Extras Color Sync Extras: Applescrip: Files Rename Profile

Now, for the System File errors...
System
A problem was found with the System file on the volume:

Enabler
Mac OS ROM
System Resources

Okay.
I'm wondering what you'd do?
Is this a hardware or software issue.
Sounds like software.
Could my CD be damaged?
I'm not particularly wreckless with it.
Perhaps if I got another from ebay...

I could just go to Apple and pay for a HD
from them, but then I'm afraid I'd run into
problems when I tried to put this system on
again. I'm not in a position to upgrade and
not sure my G3 would run panther anyway.

Once again, I'm so very appreciative of your insight
and I'm working to figure this out. It's amazing how
much you learn when you are desperate.

Perhaps I'll just go back to 8.6, but then I'm concerned
I may have issues with the files on my external that I created while on 9.2.

Thanks again, Susan

Susan,

Those errors are software problems. But I am not sure why, especially if you did a fresh install.

Your Blue & White can handle the latest OS X - Tiger.

Try starting it up while holding down the Shift key. All extensions will be off. Does it start up ?

Susan,

One more thing. Do you remember doing a firmware update?

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58374

and

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60409

For the last one you need 8.6 installed in order for it to install.

Cheryl,

Good idea about shift key, but
I still don't get any farther than
the Happy Mac face.

Yes. I had all updates to firmware.

I went to Apple and started downloading
all updates. Installed these also.
No progress past Happy Mac Face.

Beginning to think there's something wrong
with my OS 9 Cd. Though I have seen messages
about bad blocks. Isn't that hardware?

What would you do next?

Would Apple send me a HD with OS 9 already loaded?

Perhaps I'll just buy a new CD on e-bay.

Or maybe Apple would replace mine or let me download
if I gave them a number off the CD? It's just that I'm going
on a week with no Mac.

Thanks for letting me vent.
I appreciate your advice.
what would you do?

Susan,

Look at the OS 9 CD. Does it say Install or upgrade? Does it have a model name on it? If there is a model name on it, it must match your mac to exactness, not just generic. If it says upgrade, that will not do a full install as it just upgrades the system folder.

Bad blocks on a hard drive are common, and when you do a format, Drive setup and Disk first aid, close those blocks so they are not used.

Any hard drive you get to replace your present one will not have anything preloaded. You will need to format the drive (using Mac OS Extended) and then install the OS.

Rather than using eBay, I think you will have better luck with the hardware from OtherWorld Computing.

http://eshop.macsales.com/

They have OS 9 and hard drives.
