HI Troy,

I have a 12" PBookG4 running Tiger... and I have run into that same problem. The end result was purchasing DiskWarrior to repair the disc. You can get that at www.alsoft.com. It's well worth the investment.

One thing first... when you run Disk Utility, have you Repaired Permissions? This is a little different from running First Aid. And you can't repair the internal disk with Disk Utility that is installed on the drive, you can only Repair the internal drive with Disk Utility on the system CD or DVD that came with your PBook. To run Disk Utility from the system disc, power up the PBook and at the same exact time hold down the C key. When you see the Apple logo appear on the Desktop, you can let go of the C key. Ok.. Disk Utility should be loaded now. Click Utilities in the Menu. Then Click, Disk Utility. When that window opens, select the MacintoshHD in the panel on the left. Then click:
First Aid. If it says the drive needs repair that there are errors, if it indicates what those errors are, right them down so you can give me the information. So, if it needs repair, click the Repair button. It should Repair the disc that way.

Don't erase your drive just yet... post back... let me know if you were able to do this...

Hello Troy,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly!

Ok... Disk Utility's Repair utility says it can't be repaired by Disk Utility but that doesn't mean that a disk repair software like DiskWarrior can't. Either that or
TechToolPro4 by www.micromat.com.

The only other solution I can offer is to take the computer in for service.. it apparently has something wrong that needs a major fix for the Macintosh HD directory. If you don't have AppleCare, and you do get the drive fixed at a Macintosh service store, I strongly advise you to get DiskWarrior so if this happens again, you can boot the Mac from DW and it will repair the drive/files/volume...

I wish I had better advice, but if it were my Mac that is what I would do.

Regards,
Carolyn :-)

HI Troy,

Thanks for your timely response.

You can definitely try an Erase and Install. I take it you were running Panther 10.3.9 before you tried to install Tiger 10.4 ???? If so, insert the system 10.3.x disk that came with your PBook, hold down the C key, hopefully the Apple logo will appear. Try using Disk Utility in the Utility Menu one more time before you try to do an Erase. There's always that possibility that the Panther disk might be able to repair the drive where the 10.4 disk couldn't. Stranger things have happened in puter worlds.

If it can't repair the disk, you can try to Erase. If that doesn't do the job, then I'm afraid you need to take it in for repair or try DiskWarrior. BTW, DiskWarrior is what Apple uses at their stores to repair drives with. I have a local Apple store and I've watched them do this at the Genius Bar! That's why I bought DW myself. I do not work for Apple LOL... just a major Mac fan.

Ok Troy...

go ahead and try to Erase and reinstall 10.2.8 Jaguar. That just might repair the disk.
