Hi,
Absolute first time using a Apple machine so bear with my complete lack of knowledge. Always wanted to switch but never got a free machine till recently
I got a Strawberry colored iMac first generation from work hardware giveaway. I got a OS X 10.0.4 cd from a Weird stuff store close by.
This machine came without a hard drive so I got a Quantum Fireball 30GB hard drive and opened up the iMac and put in the hard drive.
I put the CD into the drive and restarted the machine with the C key pressed. Works well. Gets to the installer step 1, step 2 (README), step 3 license and then does not find the Quantum disk. My only option at this point is to quit install. The install log shows that two disks are found.
How do I prep the machine for installation? I do not have access to any other Macs or any other Mac OS CDs.
I would highly appreciate any help.
Regards,
Gaurav.
You have quite a long way to go. First, you cannot yet install OS X on that computer until you update its firmware. To
update the firmware you will need to first install OS 9.1 or higher.
When you installed the new hard drive, did you set the jumpers on the drive to MASTER or MASTER w/o SLAVE? You must check to be sure the jumpers are properly set. You will not be able to access the drive unless it has been setup as a MASTER.
Next you will need to be sure you have at least 128 MBs of RAM installed, although OS X really needs more - 384 MBs is a more practical minimum.
Since you've already learned how to access the motherboard, you need to do that again, but this time you need to replace the internal backup battery located on the motherboard. It's a 3.6 V, 1/2 AA size lithium cell available at Radio Shack or battery stores for around $10.00 US.
Last you need to get a different version of OS X. 10.0.x is a Beta version. The first standard release version was 10.1 followed by 10.2 (Jaguar), 10.3 (Panther), and 10.4 (Tiger). Your iMac can run OS X through the last Panther version, 10.3.9. It cannot run Tiger.
Once you get an OS 9.1 bootable Installer CD you will need to boot the computer from the CD, run the Drive Setup program (in the Utilities folder) and partition and format the hard drive. You must format the drive for Mac OS Extended (HFS+ or HFS Extended.) You must partition the drive such that the first partition is less than 8 GBs (about 7.85 is the usable max.) The second partition can be the remaining space on the drive. When you install OS X you will have to install it in the first partition. You can install OS 9 in either partition.
After installing OS 9 you will need to apply the firmware update. Once the firmware update has been successfully installed, you can then proceed to install OS X. Be sure to install it in the first partition.
Yes, you will need to install an earlier version of Mac OS, 8.5.1, apparently in order to install the firmware update. After the firmware update is installed, then you can install OS 9 and OS X.
