PROBLEM: Software
COMPUTER TYPE: Intergraph
MODEL: TD_310 Pentium Pro
RAM: 65+
OS VERSION: Windows NT 4
SERVICE PACK: Service Pack 3
DESCRIPTION:
Windows operating system becomes corrupted.
What is the best way to configure the partitions & install it?
Microsoft recommends at lest a 1 GB file allocation table (FAT)
system partition for computers that do not require security.
I have (2) 2.2GB drives. I'm reluctant to create that fat size
partition because of the wasted disk space due to the default cluster size. Additionally I have some very large database files along with many very small (<16K) files on my boot drive.
Defragging it would also take a long time.
What would be an optimun partition strategy?
I talked to an Intergraph Software specialist who suggested that I create a 10MB fat and what ever size ntfs partitions I wanted for the operating system. With this configuration if the system crashes I should be able to boot from the dos floppy and reinstall the operating system. I do not have or use the dos operating system. How large should that dos fat partition be?
My current partitions are for, a fat operating sys (722MB), NTFS: programs (1326MB), data,(745MB),server(745MB)& for the page file(557MB). I've tried to keep the operating system separate from my program files. This works up to a point but many programs default to the C:\Program Files folder. Which I relocate to the E:\Programs Files folder.
I hope you can come up with some suggestions. Thanks

Hello and thank you for choosing No WOnder!
As far as I can see you have a big muscled computer.
On mine, with 128 meg RAM the pagefile.sys is also 128 meg long. Do you really have 557 meg of RAM?
Using a fat16 partition with 10 meg lenght it is a good idea.
However, you don't need to keep apps separate from the operating system because, anyhow, ther's a lot of program dll's which are stored in /winNT/system32 folder.
This is the only thing you should modify in your strategy, at my knowledge.
By the way, please switch to Service Pack 4.
