I can no longer put off upgrading OS9/OSX. About a year ago I purchase OS 10.3 but have hestitated installing because I of the unknowns about being able to use my older applications, primarliy Quark 4.0. Will Quark 4.0 operate on OS 10.3?

Hello Kate

thanks for using macosx.com and I will try to help you here.

Quark 4 is a "classic app" that is it runs under OS 9 or earlier. Versions of OS X prior to the new 10.5 "Leopard" have a mode called "Classic" where you keep your old OS 9 system folder and you can run OS 9 in its own little "compatability layer" (a bit like using Parallels to run Windows on an intel Mac).

To ensure that everything remains fine i would recommend the following
1) back up your current Hard Drive (preferably to a bootable HD) and test that you can boot from it in an emergency.
2) install your 10.3 from the CD(s) making sure NOT to do Erase and Install (that is actually quite a hard thing to do... the default is upgrade which will add 10.3 leaving everything else untouched.
3) Do some reading on X - it is different and some things may need to be tweaked in your "classic OS" after you install it.

I did this a long time ago now but without any major upheaval at the time and never looked back - seriously!

Consider moving up to X native Applications - Quark is a lot of money but you may find other cheaper alternatives, depending on what you do. iWork, Swift Publisher, Stone Studio, and many others and quite a lot of stuff for X can be had free - my only concern there is that for some of these options you may find 10.3 is not enough.

I reccommend the www.opensourcemac.org website and the excellent www.pure-mac.com to you.

honestly you will not regret the change after the initial shock passes and 10.3 was a very solid OS (get it up to 10.3.9 - software update should do that for you)

Good luck.

I'm glad to hear I will still be able to operate Quark 4. Hopefully, I won't have to upgrade to Leopard any time soon. You have given me the confindence to move forward. Thank you for your prompt response.
