Hi, just got a new iMac (20" display) at home. Of course, X11 isn't installed and I need it to use Matlab and OpenOffice. The help says look on disk 3 of the OSX10.3 (or the discs that I got with the 'puter) and the packages should be there.

No such luck.

Neither the discs that I got with the iMac and the ones I own from upgrading my PowerBookG4 with 10.3 have any "packages" on disc 3. All that I can see on disc 3 is a RTF "readme" file.

Any suggestions? Where should I look for X11? Is it somewhere else? I don't want to re-install 10.3 as there's already tons of stuff on the new iMac that I also don't want to re-install.

Thanks,
- Kristine

Kristine,
Hi. I'm Per and I'll be helping you with your X11 problem.

First, what version of OS X do you have disks for? I just checked my Panther (10.3.5) disks, and 'Install Disc 3' had a folder named 'Packages' and there is a package there called 'X11User.pkg', which will install the X11 server for you.

If you have an Apple ID, you can download X11 here:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/download/

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Per

The discs I have for the iMac just say "10.3" on them ... but I think I may have found it on disc 1 ... is X11SDK.pkg okay?

Otherwise I'll just go to the apple.com site you suggested. I can't find my boxed copy (the 10.3 version I bought) right now, I think my father may have "borrowed" it for someone in his office ...

Kristine,
I don't have any 10.3 (presumably 10.3.0) disks, so I can't check to see if the X11 package is there.

You can try to install the X11SDK package, but I'm not sure it contains the server part that you need.

I think your best bet is to install the package that you can dowload from Apple. It would also give you the latest version. The file is 43MB, so it will take a good while, even on a fast connection.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Per
