I have an Intel iMac and I get no sound in iChat, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player and SightSpeed. Is there a problem with Intel iMac audio?

Terry,

Check your Audio settings. There's a known issue similar to this on the latest Macs which are capable of high sample rates. Basically another app is the culprit and resets the rate too high for other apps to use. It should be 44100.0Hz. The link below is to an Apple Support Doc explaining how to remedy the situation. It only takes a minute or so to complete thankfully, though there is still a chance you'll have to do it again at a later date. You might be able to narrow down the offending app (then send a nasty-gram to its programmers) if it happens again.

Let us know if that fixes it, if not we'll try something else.

Hi Michael,

Unfortunately, that didn't fix it. The output format was set higher but setting it to 44100.0Hz didn't cure the problem.

Did you restart after switching this setting? If not, try that (but double check that the sample rate is still set to 44100 Hz first).

Do you have the latest version of the apps in question (excluding Media Player)?

MediaPlayer is DOA as of now and if I recall correctly it's not supported under the latest versions of Tiger either. The Flip4Mac plugin for Quicktime is the official replacement for the newer OS X Tiger variants (Microsoft is distributing the plugin in lieu of the MediaPlayer app now).

Yes, I restarted and checked the sample rate.

I have reinstalled the apps several times.

Unfortunately, Flip4Mac is not available for Intel iMacs yet.

I have been on a chat with Apple Support but, so far, no solution has been found. All system related sounds appear to be working. I'm wondering if it just isn't an Intel thing although that doesn't explain the iChat problem it would explain the third party app problems.

I received an e-mail last week saying that the Intel Flip4Mac plugin was released, but after looking at their site this evening I see they have no ETA on it as of yet. Not sure what the deal is with that...must have been an error or something came up at the last minute that pushed it back. Sorry about that.

I'm going to reopen the ticket so that some of the other techs (possibly one with an Intel based Mac) can take a shot at the problem. Without having one in my possession to play with, I'm not able to really do any testing.

Good luck, hope you find the answer.
