A week ago I tried to do the update to the operating system on my Intel iMac. It was all working fine and then the software update crashed. When I try and run it now it just crashes andI have tried repairing permissions and also verifying the disk but to no good. I do get the same error in the system log each time I run the update. Since then I can no longer mount disk images, and when I cannot boot from the OS X startup DVD as when I try it just churns with the DVD in the drive and then ejects it. This means of course I cannot reinstall OS X again which is what I was trying to do. Also I can no longer download applications and install them as disk images will not mount. I am at a loss as to what to do as basically the machine is failing and I cannot re set it back to a stable state. Any ideas? BTW when I plug in my iPod it is not recognised in iTunes any more, the iMac just says that there is no iPod connected.

Here is a dump of the crash log when I try and run system update. This might help:

The crash has apparently caused substantial file corruption that has affected critical OS files. I can only recommend you try the following:

Boot from your OS X Installer. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.

If DU reports errors it cannot fix then you are in a fix because there are no third-party disk repair utilities compatible with the Intel Macs. MicroMat has released a Beta of TechTool Pro 4.5 which is Intel Mac compatible. You can download it at www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com (requires you have a current TT Pro 4.x license.) However, no guarantee this will repair the damage.

If the hard drive has been verified OK by Disk Utility but the problem is still unsolved, then you will need to do an Archive and Install if you don't want to erase the drive. However, if you have backups, then I would recommend doing an Erase and Install, then restore you personal files from your backups.

Thanks for that, Unforuneatley when I try and boot up from the install DVD it just ejects it after 30 seconds of whirring so a new install is not a possibility.

Insert the installer disc that came with the computer. It should be the one marked OS X Installer Disc 1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the computer starts up from the DVD - gray screen with dark gray Apple logo and spinning gear appears.

If the computer still will not boot from the DVD then you may have other hardware failure and should take the computer to a repair center.
