Hi James,
Welcome to free support at macosx.com!
IPP (=internet printing protocol, not IP printing) came out in 2000, after the 2100, so I don't think IPP is supported by that printer. On the other hand, IP printer > HP Jetdirect protocol is the preferred protocol for most HP printers with network connections. Please try that.
If you have trouble with that, please come back and tell me more about your network.

I see you tried socket - you used Advanced protocols for that? Please tell me the printer's IP address and your computer's IP address.
How do the OS 9 computers print to the printer? Appletalk or LPD (Desktop Printer Utility)?

thanks for that my ip is 192.168.254.1 on my tcp/ip whic uses dhcp server....the printers ip from its printout is 192.168.10.1...i think 9.2.2. printers connect via appletalk how do `i tell if they are printing via LPD?
tried HP socket direct and only got "attempting to connec to host on prt 9100" which always times out.

On OS 9, you can only set up to print via LPD using the Apple Desktop Printer Utility - you create a desktop printer that has settings for IP address, queue name and PPD.
If you want to print using TCP/IP, you need to change the printer's IP address to be within the same subnet. The router is actually looking outside of your network for the printer - and not finding it. You can use the OS 9 computers to change the 2100's IP address. Use the HP Laserjet Utility, which gets installed with the driver. If your DHCP is assigning IPs in the 192.168.254.1 & 192.168.254.2, etc. range, assign the printer to be 192.168.254.100 and not use DHCP if that setting appears.
To setup using the HP socket/JetDirect protocol, click ADD, click IP printer at the top of the window, then select HP Jetdirect from the pull-down menu. No need for the advanced menus.

sorry you have lost me there..am i now:
1.assigning new ip address to laser jet via other 9.2.2 computers
2. this new ipp address would be 192.168.254.100
3.once done add new printer in osx using HP direct jet socket etc??????
