I have two queries please:

1. I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.4.8 with 2 GB RAM.

Historically, I have always separated my data from the OS by creating two partitions and was wondering whether this is still advisable given the intel/10.4.8 combination and the possibility of installing parallels at some point in the future to run XP Pro.

Are there any known issues with partitioning in this way?

2. Is the Firewall that comes shipped with Mac OS 10.4.8 more robust than a third party product such as Norton Internet Security?

Your thoughts would be gratefully received.

With thanks and kind

Hi Victor

Partitioning is not going to cause any problems, but with the speed of the machine and drives, it really isn't necessary.

My choice to use Parallels, would be to partition and install Windows on it's own partition.

Thanks for quick response Bob.

Can you recommend a size for Parallels partition?

Also - any thoughts on query regarding firewall.

Regards

Victor.

Parallels will install on your OS X partition. You need to decide how much space you will want to use for the System you'll be installing using Parallels. Don't under estimate that.

I'd probably have a 30 - 40GB partition for Windows. Depends on how much you'll be installing on the Windows system.

As for a Firewall, OS X has a pretty good one built in.

If you use a router, it will have a hardware firewall.

I would use anything Norton's.

Bob,

One of your colleagues reckons you may have meant NOT to recomend Norton Products for use on Intel OSX Macs. Could you just clarify this and if this is the case what would you recommend as an alternative for anti virus?

Finally, Am slightly confused with regards partitioning. I assumed that Parallels would install XP Pro onto a separate partition if available. If this is not the case then is there any real point in partitioning the drive at all.

Thanks and regards

Victor.

DeltaMac is Correct. I meant to say not to use anything Nortons. Norton products have cause a lot of problems on OS X Systems.

ClamXAV is the only virus software I would use;

Currently, there are No viruses that can affect an OS X system.

Parallels installs as a program on your OS X system and allows you to choose a destination for the Windows install.

My preference would be either a second partition or a second drive to install the Windows system to.

Easier to reinstall if necessary, which often happens with a Windows system.

The Parallels install guides will tell you about installing.
