Hi,
I am new to the Mac OSX, and have been having a problem since I installed Tiger. My internal modem does not respond to connection requests. I have tried the assistant, and it cannot solve the issue. I have the sound up and do not hear any Modem activity. It worked fine before the upgrade. Any hepl would be appreciated.

Thanks
Rod

Rod,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

Go to your Home folder>Library folder>Preferences Folder

Now go to the View menu and select by list. Everything will be in alpha order.
Locate and trash the following:

com.apple.internetconfig.plist
com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist
com.apple.internetconnect.plist
com.apple.internetpref.plist

Restart the computer, empty the trash. Now go to System Preferences>Network and set up the modem.

You should now be able to connect.

If not, how did you install Tiger? Update, Archive or clean install?

Cheryl,
None of these files are in the location you noted. I believe I loaded Tiger as an upgrade.

Thanks

Rod,

You will need to do an Archive and Preserve install of Tiger.

Start up from your Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger DVD
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.

The Upgrade install sometimes does not keep your original files, trashing them in the install, but never replacing them.

Once you have done this, your Applications and Home folder will remain untouched, but you will have a new system folder installed complete with all the files you need for the modem.

Hi Cheryl,
The installation Set up will not allow me to choose anything other than the Update. I do have a copy of my System, that I made right before I updated to Tiger. Is there a way to get the files I need from the Backup Copy, and import them to my updated system?

Thanks

Rod,

Does that Tiger install DVD say Full install or upgrade? It is strange that it will not allow you to change it to Archive. -- unless you do not have enough free space on your hard drive.

Yes you can use your backup files of your Preference folder or just your home Library - if that is on the list of what you had backed up.

Just open Backup, At the top select restore from.... your backup.
Now select the one folder you need (Library or Preferences of your home folder) - then click on Restore Now.

You should be back to smooth internet access now.

Hi Cheryl,
I tried to move the old Pref. file from my copy of the Drive that I made before installing Tiger, But it didn't seem to make a differance. Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks

Rod,

I now wish I was sitting in front of your computer.

Try starting up the computer with the Tiger DVD. If you have a Powerbook, make sure the power cord is plugged in.
When it starts up, do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.

Now click on the second icon at the top left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom right.
Watch the activity screen. If it states it is doing repairs, you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time. You want to see Appears okay.

Now click on Repair Permissions.

When done, quit Disk Utility and restart the computer. Now give it a try.
