Hi, I hope someone here can assist me with my problem b/c Apple Support couldn't help me by other than suggesting to archive and install my Tiger. I have an iMac G5 20" that i bought 2 weeks ago. my internal modem won't make any sounds while its trying to connect to an ISP. it does connect in the end, but NO sounds from the modem although I have the modem sound option turned on on my internal modem configuration window. and it does this with more than one ISP that i tried to dial up to. it's worth saying that I tried to connect via dial-up just last week and I was able to hear the modem sounds and connected successfully to the internet. is the only option available for me now is doing the archive and install thing?? your help will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hello Adnan :-)

Let's try this first and see if it works.

Go to your MacintoshHD>Library>Preferences
then locate this file: com.apple.networkConfig.plist

Drag that file to the Trash and empty the Trash.

This is just a preference file that can sometimes become corrupted and cause things to act weird. Let me know if my suggestion helps.

Hi Carolyn, and thanks a bunch for the quick reply, I got your response earlier today and tried trashing the com.apple.networkconfig.plist file and emptied the trash, but it didn't appear to help any, I even went ahead and trashed th system configuration folder in the preferences folder but nothing still..... any more suggestions?? and BTW I recently installed a wmv plug-in for quicktime player (called Flip4mac WMV player) to be able to play WMV files, could that have contributed to the problem?? thanks

Hello Adnan,

Oh, yes, a wmv plug in for QuickTime might be the problem. Uninstall it and see what happens.

Also, run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions. If you aren't familiar with this utility yet since your iMac G5 is so new, go to:
MacintoshHD>Applications>Utilties Locat "Disk Utiity" and double click on it.
When the window opens, select "Macintosh HD" on the left, then click Repair Permissions at the bottom. Repairing Permissions fixes a lot of glitches in a Mac OS.

One other thing I just thought of. You're using an internal modem so that means a phone line. I don't know your internet service provider but with AOL I have to set my preferences so that call waiting disables the modem sound. You might check your ISP software to see if that has anything to do with this problem.

Also, if you have external speakers connected make sure they are turned on.

Hi carolyn, I managed to troubleshoot the issue and found out it has to do with the DiVX I installed lately on my iMac, and the specific culprit is a file: library>quicktime>DivX 5.component. When i remove this file from the quicktime folder the modem sound apears, when i put it back, the sound goes away.. but the expense here would be AVI files won't play with audio (AC3) when this file is removed from the quicktime folder, so i guess my question then would be, is there any other way i can retain both functionalities?? more specifically, is there any other application or plug-in /codec that will let me play avi files on quicktime with audio without having to resort to DivX and the subsequent problems it causes?? thanks again..

Hi Adnan,

So it was a QuickTime issue...

Also, have you tried posting at the Apple forums: http://www.apple.com/support/quicktime/

And at VersionTracker.com in the Search box top left of the page type in DivX http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/mo...844&vid=106982
That link has an update for DivX.

And at Smartcomputing:
http://www.smartcomputing.com/Editor...0w01.asp&guid=

I think it's going to be one or the other... check out the information above and let me know what you find out.

This issue is interesting!!!! Glad you brought to our attention in case other people have the same experience.

Thank you,

Carolyn :-)
