I am trying to access my documents that have been saved on my zip drive... it is going very slow and it just sits and thinks when I try to move the scroll bar.
I am not sure what is going on - it doesn't matter which one I use... I was wondering is there a fix for it or do I have to replace it. This is my job and I need to know quick if possible. It is an internal zip drive (250) on a Power PC G4 with 1.12 GB SDRAM I am using Mac OS X Version 10.3.9
I am not sure what is going on....
Thanks so much!

Loma,

If you use that zip disk often, it could have some corrupt files on it. Try this and see if it helps.

Insert the zip disk
Go to Applications>Utilities and start up Disk Utility.
What that opens, give it a few minutes to gather the information for all the drives.
You will see the zip drive icon in the side bar to the left. Click on the icon, then click on repair drive.

Watch the activity. If it does any repairs, hit Repair disk again. You want the final result to be drive seems to be okay, no repairs.

Once done, quit Disk Utility and give the disk a try. Let me know how you do.

Loma,

That zip disk is failing (not the drive but the disk). You can try using a third party disk utility such as Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro if you have one of them. Both are available on line, but they are not free. If you want to try them, let me know and I will give you a direct link.

I do recommend that you copy those files that are on that disk to a different disk such as a flash drive or a special folder on your hard drive. Then for portability, put them on a different zip disk. It may be slow because of the condition of that disk, but it needs to be done before you lose everything.

Many people are now using the flash drives (thumb drives) as they hold more files, and it is a direct usb connection. Their prices have gone down since they first were introduced.

I have ordered a new zip drive - because it doesn't matter which disk I use.... even a new one... so I figured it is going out. I am going to try to put all of the files on a disk when I can and also a flash drive. Thanks so much for you help... do you think this will work?

Loma,

If a new zip drive is slow to open, then indeed that indicates a bad drive. You did a good job of troubleshooting. Your plan should work to correct the problem.

Do you know how to swap out the bad drive with the new drive?

I just ordered an external one so I don't have to take the old one out - the old one is an internal one. Will that be ok or do I have to take the old one out so the computer will not get mixed up. What do you think?

Loma,

You can use the external without taking the broken internal one out. The computer will not get mixed up and since you already have the drivers installed, all you need to do is plug it into a USB port and use it. No software installation needed.

I got it yesterday afternoon... I did install the disk that came with it.... will that mess it up - or should I take it off? Or will it not matter?
Thanks so much for your help!

Loma,

As long as you are not experiencing any trouble you do not need to worry. The installer should have been smart and just updated the drivers.

If you do not have any more questions, can I go ahead and close this ticket?
