A problem developed out of the blue today where applications using the internet (Mail, Safari, Explorer) crash while staring up. The dialogue box says "[the application] has quit unexpectly. No other applications have been affected."
I rebooted, I called my internet provider, I called Apple Support (no help at all -- the guy in India said he's have to charge me $50 for any advice, since I don't have Applecare -- still, he advised me to buy Tiger!)
I would gladly buy Tiger if I knew it would solve the problem. What I'd really like to do is download OSX 10.2.8 and reinstall it. (I don't have original installation discs as this is an old computer -- G4, 256, bought in 2000 by the university I used to work for.) I've discoverd I can get Safari open and thus connected to the internet only buy choosing "buy mac products" from the apple menu. This seems to bypass whatever is causing things to crash from the desktop.
I ran disk repair by using my iBook's install disc as a startup disc so I could run utilities on my hard drive. It said it repaired one seriously damaged and one minorly damaged file -- still, nothing changed. I also ran Norton virus, but got impatient after 70,000 files or so.
I'm not a novice user -- I've used macs for years -- but I'm not a techie either. I feel like the advice I need may be pretty basic (like "get rid of the old computer.") Anyhow, any advice welcome.
thanks,
Molly
I had similar problems until I deleted all Norton application files. Seems to be a lot of problems with Norton in the forums. If you can get along without it, try this solution and let me know the results.
I was able to install a later version of 0SX (10.3.3) using my iBook disks, which solved the problem.
