We just bought a macbook 2.4 and we cannot get it to connect to the internet via our home airport (model M8440) that we use for the ibook G4 (OS 10.4) and an old iMac (OS 10.2). The airport is connected to a cable modem via a cat6 cable and works fine with the older computers. The new macbook shows the airport base station but does not connect to the internet. However, it does connect to the internet elsewhere (public wifi) but not through the airport at home. Any suggestions?
Your Airport Base station is only capable of connecting with an 80211.b card. The older Macs have cards that will connect. The MacBook may not be compatible - or rather, the old base station is no longer compatible with the newest cards.
You may need to replace your base station with one that is more compatible with the newer wireless modes. Your iBook G4 has an Airport Extreme card, which would also benefit from the faster 80211.g speeds on a newer wireless router.
Ok, that is what I was suspecting could be the problem. If I do replace the airport base station, will the newer airport still work with my older iMac (power PC G3 running 10.2.8)?
