hello,
I have a Mac G5 that is connected to the internet via Airport Express. The problem is when I switch to the login window and come back, though the airport signal is strong, the internet connection is down. I must restart the computer to be able to connect to the internet.
I almost always have the email program open and set to check mail every 5 minutes. My G4 at work does not have this problem, as I leave it at the login window for long periods of time and everything works fine when I come back.
Thanks for your insight!

Hi Tanya,

My name is Vinko, I will attempt to help you with your question.

May I assume that you've set up your Airport Express to connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Whether this is ADSL or Cable connection is not really relevant.

May I also assume that you're using what they call PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) to connect to your ISP?

I do not have an Airport Express, but I believe the "Airport Admin Utility" that you would use to configure your Airport Express should have the same following settings.

1. Start your Airport Admin Utility.
2. You should see your Airport Express as one of the entries in the Select Base Station list.
3. Double click on this entry in the list to connect to it. You will be asked to enter the Administration password for your Airport Express. Please note that this may not be the same "client password" you have configured the Airport with. By "client password" I mean the password that a person may need to enter to connect to your Airport wireless network to use the Internet.
4. After the Configuration window is opened for your Airport Express, please go to the Internet panel. You should see that Connect Using popup menu have the "PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)" item selected.
5. Go down to the Configure PPPoE section, you will find the "Always stay connected" checkbox. You need to make sure this is "checked".

Please understand that if you have the "Always stay connected" checkbox checked, you will be connect to your ISP 24 hours a day, so you will need to be aware that you may be charged for this 24 hours a day connection, depending on the service plan you have subscribed to.

I hope this helps.

Hi Vinko,
Thanks so much for the response. I followed your instructions, and found that the "Always stay connected" box was already checked...
We have 3 computers here connected to the Internet via the Airport - 2 laptops (1 G3 and 1 G4) and the desktop G5.
Only the G5 has this problem of disconnecting internet access if left unattended at the login window for awhile.
The other computers remain connected as long as they're on, and we can leave them at the login window for long periods of time and they are fine when we log back in. We have DSL which is always on. So its definitely an issue with the G5 itself, not the internet connection.
Thanks again!

Dear Tanya,

Thank you for your reply and clarifications.

I am stumped at the moment as to why your desktop G5 is having this problem.

I will think aloud to offer a few things you can answer so that we can further analyze your problem:
1. Are all the 3 Macs running the same OS? What are they?
2. Is the Desktop G5 connected to the Airport wirelessly or wired?
3. Are you sharing 1 IP Address via your DSL account? Or are you sharing a range of IP Addresses among your Macs?

In the mean time I will open your question back out to the community to see if someone else can also assist you.

Tanya,

I have not had this experience myself, but others I know have. Basically, it has to do with setting up your Wireless Network settings (WEP Authentication password etc) for each user account. Once you have done this, it should allow you to switch users without loosing your connection.

If that doesnt' work, it is probabyl associated with Keychains as well. Let me know if that doesn't work and I will contact a friend of mind that had this direct issue and see what resolved it for him.
