Bought a new (refurb) G5 from apple's store a few days ago - runningg 10.3.8 on it - BUT
I am having to reboot ten times daily because Internet Connect is hanging - usually within an hour or so, there's a beach ball icon over it - when there should be a mouse pointer. I have tried removing all network settings except my Alcatel Speed Touch USB modem settings - and I've also disabled "sleep" - but neither of these things have helped. I've tried not showing it in the menu bar - doesn't help.
As I was previously using the same very reliable USB modem on my ibook on 10.3.8 with none of these problems it would appear the BT ISP is not at fault. It appears to be a gremlin in the MacOS software... i've disabled all the other settings in my network preferences except USB Modem but that dosn't help.
BT broadband assign the server ID when you log in and my PPP and TCP settings are identical to those that reliably worked in my ibook .

Hi David
I would download and install the 10.3.8 Combo Update. Doing this has fixed a lot of problems.
You can get it here;
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...1038combo.html
Make sure all security Updates are installed. You can check in Software Update to see if there are any to be installed.
If this doesn't work, I would contact the Apple store.

Nope didn't help

Disconnect any devices that you have attached, except keyboard, mouse, monitor and modem. Try that way.
Create a new user and log into that account and see if the same thing happens.
If it doesn't, something in your main account is causing the problem. If the problem still happens in a new user account, reformat the drive and setup the modem, with no other software installed or devices attached and see if it works. If not, contact Apple.

Tried new user - didn't help - had already disabled everything - and contacted apple -they advised as you did - I now plan to make a back up and reformat drive etc - however backing up in X compared to 9.1 is proving a bit of a nightmare too

If you have a sencond drive installed, or an external USB or Firewire drive, that would be the easiest way to bakup.
Let me know your method of backing up and what you want to backup and if you need help.

I have a temperamental EXT Firewire/USB drive - at the moment it only shows up if I use the usb cable for some reason.
Thanks I could sure use some help on the backing up process - It's clearly not as simple as OS 9.1 - dragging the int HD into the icon doesn't seem to work
bobw - Apr 8, 2005 - 7:54 am
David
No, you can't drag and drop to copy a drive as you could in OS 9. With OS X, you need to use Carbon Copy Cloner.
You can download that here;
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13260
It's $5.00 Shareware, but I believe you can use it without paying.

Thanks - finally soundsl ike I might be making progress - I also managed to make a back up DVD earlier of some critical folders - which does seem to like drag and drop
bobw - Apr 8, 2005 - 9:29 am
David
yes, drag and drop works fine for backing up folders.
You can use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the entire drive to another drive, then just copy back folders you want, like email, bookmarks, files, etc.
If you use CCC, after you reinstall the system on your main drive and everything is working ok, and you have your apps installed, you can wipe the external disk and use CCC to clone your main drive to the external for a complete good system on it.

Thanks again Bob - this is really a huge help
I've downloaded a copy of CCC - and I'm using it to clone my HD to the Firewire Drive! It's taking forever because I'm having to use it's USB port - but at least it seems to be working! To get the ext Crossfire HD to be recognised as a firewire device I need to first install an update to the ext HD - which can only be done by connecting it to a Mac running 10.3.6 or earlier - whew - nothing is simple is it?
Sooo.... once all that's complete- I should be able to do a total wipe of the drive and a clean install - and this time I'm not going to use the ibook preferences - will create a totally new account.
Then I'll have to go back to the drawing board to try and import my keys for PGP - and install my OS 9 applications and get them to work - but it does sound as though by tomorrow I should have everything working properly - and then I'll find out if it's solved the internet connect problem or not!! IF it hasn't then I'm out of ideas... but we'll find out I guess. Is there anything fundamentallly different about the architecture of the G5 over the G4 - which could cause these hangs in the G5 but not in the G4???
bobw - Apr 8, 2005 - 9:52 am
David
Definitely don't use preferences from the iBook on the G5, that can screw things up. Install everything, and setup internet from scratch. The G4 and G5 are completely different and you shouldn't install things on the G5 by copying/dragging over, other than created files. Install everything fresh.

I hear that!

Hmm.. bad news .. started from scratch - did the erase and clean install - downloaded new drivers from speedtouch.co.uk... but got a system hang about 1hr 30 mins after logging on... so severe I had to power down the G5 from the startup button. Now I'm kinda out of ideas... as will Apple be I fear.

My guess is the USB modem. I would see if the modem has Ethernet port and try that. If not, ask your ISP if they can supply an ethernet modem rather than the USB modem.

no it doesn't haved anythging except a USB connector - ... sounds like I'll need to buy a new modem
This mac was a refurb from Apple Bob - Is there anything in the hardware of the mac itself that could account for this??? It passed the Apple Hardware Tests.
Thanks

David
If other USB devices work ok, then doubtful it's a hardware problem within the machine.
If you get a new modem, I would get one that can connect using Ethernet.

Hmm.. well the only other USB devices I use are the keyboard and mouse... but I guess they are ok
bobw - Apr 9, 2005 - 12:02 pm
David
Yes, it the machine had a hardware problem with the USB, you'd also have a problem with the keyboard/mouse.
