Hi I have a iMac version 10.2.8
I run Safari and Internet exporer. I have no problem opening Safari, but yesterday and today I can not log into Internet Explorer it freezes halfway through logging on. I was running IE 5.2.3

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Michele

I did post this question yesterday but I have not seen a response yet.

Hopefully someone will have a soluton.

Howdy! I have 10.2.8 on my home computer as well…

I checked mactopia.com, microsoft's mac support page, and you have all the requirements for IE. (Also be aware that they have as of about 2 weeks ago discontinued support for IE.)

The only thing I can suggest is to repair your permissions and see if that clears up your issue:
apps/utilities/disk utility/first aid/repair permissions, then restart your computer.

You should do this regularly for optimal system performance.

So get back to me when you've done this and hopefully your IE will work.

Hi It just so happens that when I turned the computer on the next day I had no problem with IE.So I don't know what the problem was before but it is working now

But I did what you suggested about the repair permissions. The repair started right away but it would get to the very end and just stop. I tried shutting the computer down and trying it again but the same thing happened. So I thought I would just shut down and try it again today. Well the same thing still happens. Below is the log I got

2006-01-12 17:50:28 -0500 - Repair of privileges has started
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/hfs.fs/hfs.util. New permissions are 33261
Group differs on ./private/var/run/utmp, should be 0, group is 1
Owner and group corrected on ./private/var/run/utmp
Permissions corrected on ./private/var/run/utmp
Permissions differ on ./usr/share/man/man1/less.1, should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -r--r--r--
Owner and group corrected on ./usr/share/man/man1/less.1
Permissions corrected on ./usr/share/man/man1/less.1
Permissions differ on ./usr/share/man/man1/more.1, should be -r--r--r-- , they are -rw-r--r--
Owner and group corrected on ./usr/share/man/man1/more.1
Permissions corrected on ./usr/share/man/man1/more.1

So I am not sure how to get this to do the repair. Any ideas on this one?
I have done the repair before and this hasn't happened. It progresses along and then at the very end it just stops and it won't alow me to do anything so I have to say stop and quit disk utilities.

Thanks for your help.

In that case I'd recommend using your system disk, boot up with it, and run File/Disk Utilities from the system disk. Don't reinstall OS X.

That should allow you to repair and keep the OS X system out of your way at the same time.

I looked through all of my discs and I don't have one that says system disc. Here are the disc that I have:
I have one that says Apple hardware test.Could this be the one, I doubt it but I don't know what to use. I have 3 that say software restore and 2 disks that say Install disc. None that say system disc. Should I have had one that says system disc? I tried the install one but I couldn't get anywhere with that one because I did not want to reinstall as you said. any other ideas. I have tried to repair permissions everyday and it still gets to the very end and stops.

Use system disk 1. Sorry I didn't say that before.

I don't have any that says system disc 1. I have either:

restore or install discs

I tried to use the install disc,1 but it says on the disc to hold down the c key you said to start up using the option key.

Thanks for being so patient with me.

Is it the insatll disc the one I should use and if so can you walk me through it.

thanks

No worries. I thought you said you had a system disk, but it actually is install disk 1 you need to boot up with. Here's what you do:

--insert cd
--restart computer with c key held down till your computer is fully booted up.
--Don't reinstall OS X. Close/quit the dialog box that wants you to reinstall
--Go to File/Open Disk Utility
--Then in Disk Utility you need to go to First Aid/Repair Disk Permissions and also Repair Disk. Do both in that order.
--Then reboot, hold the mouse button down til the cd pops out and log in.

This should fix your problem, but let me know if not.

OK I tried to do what you said. This is what happened.

I tried to quit the install but it said do you want to restart of course I didn't want to restart so I went to the file and opened up disc utilities.

I did repair disc permissions and waited while the blue line went across. Just like before without the install disc in, it went right to the end and then it just stopped. I waited for quite awhile and when I thought it wasn't going to go any further I hit repair disc. this is what it said:

repairing disc and then it stopped and said.

unmount failed

The disc "Michele" failed to unmount because it is in use, the operation has been canceled. I don't know what they are talking about by saying it is in use.

I really am not having any problems with my computer at this time, but when I try to do this repair permissions thing it really bugs me that I can't get it to work. I just don't know what I am doing wrong. It just seems to go right along and then just stops.

Thanks,
Michele

So were you able to start up using the cd? You have to boot up with install disk 1 and repair disk from there. It says the unmount failed probably because you weren't booted up from the cd but still from your hard drive (as you normally would be if you just turn on your computer without the cd).

Let me know if you were able to boot up with the install cd.

Yes I was able to start up from the CD

Okay try this. Boot up in Safe Mode:

Restart
Hold the command (clover) + s keys down till you see a black screen.
Type in fsck -f (forces a system check)
Type in "reboot" when the system check is complete (you'll see evidence of progress, some scrolling text as it fixes things)

After you reboot see if you can repair permissions without it stalling.

We'll get this handled somehow, I'm sure of it.

Thanks for being so positive. I am not at home righh now, I am just checking my email from another computer, so I will try this when I get home. You are being very helpful and kind. I will let you know how I make out when I try this.

OK I think I have tried everything. I did what you said about forcing a system check. That all worked great. It said when I was done that the volume "Michele" was repaired succesfully, the file system was modified. I did the reboot like you said.

OK here is where things didn't go great again. I tried to go and repair permissions right from the app/utilities and so on. Still got hung up on the same spot.

So then I put in the install disc 1 and tried to do it from there, the same thing happend. so then I thought forget the repair permissions I started over and just said repair disc instead of the repair permissions. It worked and it said the disc was repaired.

So I tried to repair permissions again and you guessed it, it still gets hung up on the very end and stops. I thought maybe I didn't wait long enough to see if it would go further and finish so I waited about 20 minutes and it stilled stayed right where it ended off.

do I really need to repair permissions?

I would like to be sure everything is running smoothly, but it seems no matter what we try it just isn't working and I don't know if you may be running out of ideas.

I will try to work on this again later or tomorrow. No school tomorrow so I will have time to work on it again.

Thanks,
Michele

It's strange that you still can't repair permissions after all that we've done, but hey, this is computers…they can surprise you.

So I think you should use the hardware test cd and see if you have something hardware based like bad RAM or a bad hard drive as your issue. Run the hardware test by booting up with that disk and let me know if it picks up any errors.

Do you have an apple store in your area? Your next step after the hardware test might be to have them look at your computer.
nanamichele - Jan 16, 2006 - 8:14 am

image
OK I did the hardware test and that ran smoothly. No hardware problems were detected.

So again I tried to repair permissions.

When I go there, verify permissions and repair disk permissions are blackened. I press repair now just the verify is darkend. This time again it went smoothly right to the end and then stops. I waited a half hour this time to see if it would go further, but no such luck.

In the left hand box before I say repair permissioons I clicke on what looks like a HD with my name. I assumed that was the disk I was repairing.

Also in that left hand box I could have clicked on picture of HD that says 38.16 GB Maxtor, I don't know what this is.

Do I really need to worry that I can't get this to repair if it seems the computer is working ok?

there is an Apple store in our area.

In the repair permissions/disk utility make sure you pick the second hard drive icon, not the one one with the name you chose for it.

If it still doesn't work you can download this free app called CacheOut:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14850

And this program called Mac OS X Cocktail:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26124
(you can use this program in demo mode, then you have to purchase it if you want to keep it indefinitely)

If your computer is working fine then there isn't really an issue, but it is very strange that you can't repair permissions either booted up with the install 1 cd or booted up as normal to your hard drive.

Make sure you repair your internal hard drive (the name you chose for it is listed first, then the computer's name for it is just below it; click on this second name)
nanamichele - Jan 16, 2006 - 1:58 pm
image
image
You said to pick the second hd icon. there are only two there one has my name and the other has 38.16 GB Maxtor

When I highlight the 38.16 GB maxtor the verify Disk Perm and the Repair disk perm lightens so it doesn't give me an option to do anything with this one.

The only one I can work from is the one with my name, that is the one that is stalling at the very end. the only other icon there is the one that says 38.16 GB Maxtor and it won't allow me to do anything with that one. Could this be where the problem lies. Because I have been trying to repair permissions with the name I chose for it.

You said (the name you chose for it is listed first, then the computer's name for it is just below it; click on this second name) On my computer utilities disk the name I chose is second not first.

Download and run the two programs I listed in my previous post. Just do CacheOut first.

For Mac OS X Cocktail you'll need to go to the far right "Pilot" and make sure all boxes are checked to run all.

Let me know if you can then repair permissions.

You don't have any external hard drives attached to your computer or any other peripherals, do you? I'd recommend disconnecting everything, printers, internet, etc. as you do these fixes, just to be sure they aren't the issue.

Any other devices connected to your computer?
nanamichele - Jan 16, 2006 - 2:11 pm

That's ok you certainly gave it a try. I just downloaded the cacheout and I am going to run it.
I am at the screen of Cache out X
It says:
delete caches from all browsers
delete history from files all browsers
delete cookies from files all browsers
delete IE download cache
delete caches from sherlock
delet Safari favicons (what does this mean?)

Do I check them all and say proceed?
Natobasso - Jan 16, 2006 - 2:56 pm
image
image
yes, select all.

what you're basically doing with cache out is deleting any saved files like cached web pages, and all sorts of other data that you don't need to save that can slow down your computer's performance.

(Oh, and I haven't given up yet. He he.)

I might have stumbled onto something. Hope you can follow me. I did not yet download Mac OS X cocktail, but here is what I did.

I did do the CacheOut

Then I rebooted from the install disk and went to the hd with my name since it wouldn't allow me to do any thing on the one that said maxtor.

So instead of doing disk permission I just did disk repair.
It ran smoothly and at the end it said repair completed, but 5 items came up in red:
overlapped extent allocation (file 860237d)
there were 5 of these all with different numbers.
Like I said at the end it said repair completed so then I went and hit verify and at the end of that it said volume "Michele" needs to be repaired again I went and said repair disk and the red items came up again but at the end it said repairs completed.

Can you make anything of this?

So before I go on there is one more thing I am going to do. the latest thing that I plugged into my computer is a digital camera dock. I will unplug that and see if that makes a difference/

Natobasso - Jan 16, 2006 - 4:10 pm
image
image
It's good that you found those red errors. Might be the culprits right there!
The real trick will be to boot up without the cd and run a repair permissions on your hard drive again so it finishes completely…

What kind of camera do you have?
nanamichele - Jan 16, 2006 - 4:50 pm
image
image
Ok I unplugged the camera dock, I have a Kodak easy share V550,,,,it is a great camera.

I booted up without the CD and went to disk utilities. this time it only had verify disk highlighted and the the repair disk permissions I could not just repair disk. So I clicked repair disk permissions and it is still doing the same thing. I think I have wasted enough of my time and yours as well.

Can you just tell me why when I booted up from the install disk it allowed me to go right to the repair disk, and also why were those 5 things in red about the overlapped extent allocations. How do I go about and fix them even after when it said repairs completed those items were still in the red.

I say I give up but it really does bug me. I guess if I run into any major problems I will have to bring the computer in to an apple dealer. thanks for sticking with me. I didn't download the Mac OS X Cocktail, do you thing that will make a difference after we tried so many other things? I just don't want to purchase anything I am not sure of.

My wife sells (and now owns courtesy of a xmas present from me!) the Kodak Easy Share camera and printer dock.

I don't know what the errors mean, but if they are in red I know that's a serious issue. Since it's not a hardware issue we know it's something in the software, probably a bad directory block that might cause problems down the road if you don't fix them. I'll venture to guess you can't repair permissons because your computer can't find some or all of them.

Definitely run Cocktail. It's a very powerful program and might just fix your issue.

By the way, how long do you leave your computer on between shut downs? Have you installed any new software lately?

nanamichele - Jan 16, 2006 - 5:56 pm
image
image
I will run Cocktail.

The only thing I installed and that was in November was the Kodak easy share software.

I do leave my computer on a lot. A lot of times it doesn't even get shut down at night. I have been trying to shut down now at night and when I go to work I try to remember to shut it down too.

Is it best to leave it at rest or shut it down completely?
Natobasso - Jan 16, 2006 - 6:00 pm

image
I usually leave my computer on all the time at home, but my work computer I shut off for weekends.

Every now and then I restart and repair permissions to keep things running smoothly, adn there are a lot of different opinions on this subject. in general, give your computer a break from time to time.

I imagine you've never repaired permissions before and there's just a back log of issues that will gradually work themselves out as you run cache out and cocktail regularly.

Once we get your computer to repair permissions once I'll consider it a success.

I just finished running Cocktail and it took awhile but it did finish and the screen that is showing now is it says pilot and all the items were checked and it said last run on Mond, Jan. 16.....

It seems I could run it again or just quit it.

I thought you said I would be running it in a demo mode. It didn't say anything about demo. I actually had to drag the icons into my applications folder to install and then I ran it.

Did I do something wrong. I am going to keep the cocktail window open till I hear from you thanks.

I watched it run and it took awhile when it got to repair disk permissions.

How much is it to purchase this or do I now have it free, I am so unsure right now as to what I am doing.

It's me again. I just ran disk utilities again after I ran Cocktail and the problem still exists. I can not complete the repair disk permissions.

Let me tell you this. Like I said before I can only click on to my hd with my name to repair disk permission. when I looked at the top it said 1 volume selected 0 disks that is where I am trying to repair disk permission. It is a volume what ever that means.

when I click on 38.16 GB Maxto it says 1 disk selected and 0 volume selected. but like I said before when I click on the Maxtor it nothing is highligthe so I can't do any function with that one even though it says that is the disk.

so I guess we are back to square one.

Let me know what I should do with the cocktail screen I have open. Thanks.

Don't worry about your Cocktail screen, just close it.

Thank you again for all your help, time and patience.
I can create and do wonderful things with my conputer, but I really am not up on all the mechanisms of what makes it tick and run. Thanks to you I now have CacheOut and I think I have Mac OS X Cocktail. I did run them both again today and everything seems to be in order. So of course I tried to repair disk permissions again but could not get it to finish. I tried with the install one disk and just said repair disc and the red items came up again. But at the end it said disk repaired even though the red items were still there. I then booted up without the install disk and then it does not allow me just to repair disk so I tried to repair permissions and of course it stops at the very end. Oh well they can't say we didn't try.
Again thanks for all your help I really did appreciate it.

I am going to wait to see if I have any other problems before I bring it to Apple.

No worries. Sorry for the persistent problem! I guess the important thing is your computer still functions normally; just give it lots of love.

After about 30 days your Cocktail program will want a registration number, but just hit the Cancel button when it comes up and you can still use it. However, it's always good to compensate the software developers.

I'll close this thread now, but if you have more problems and want me to answer, just put my name, Nathaniel, in the subject line of your post.
