I don't have enough knowledge to follow complicating instructions. I'm a senior who has finally been able to function a lot better and I'm proud what I've accomplished.

First of all where can I find an upgrade for my present OS.

Secondly, where can I find an upgrade for Internet Explorer. Mine is presently 5.2 I think

Thirdly, when I download anything. Should I first download to the desktop and drag it to the HD? When I find it in the HD, should I click on it to activate it?

Thank you.

Hi Joelle,

The latest version of QS X is 10.4.x Tiger. That means that Apple will only release updates for that version. OS X 10.2.x will not be updated any further. There may be the occasional Security Update, but don't expect them all that frequently.

To ensure that you have the latest version available, open your System Preferences, click on 'Software Update' and the on the 'Check Now' button. Ignore any software for peripherals such as iPods, etc, if you don't actually have them.

You can check the 'Check for updates' button, but set it to "Weekly" rather than "Daily".

If you want to upgrade from OS X 10.2 to OSX 10.3 or 10.4, you will have to buy it from Apple or an Apple reseller. You can also get OS X 10.4 from Amamzon.com. Do you need to? Well if you want to do things that involve the very latest technologies, such as web development, then yes, but as you say that you are a "senior" (I'm no spring chicken myself!), then I would have thought that you would gain very little from upgrading.

Microsoft has stopped developing Internet Explorer for the Mac, so your v5.2 is the latest available. Try Safari. I find it to be a far better browser! (But that's just my opinion. )

You also ask about downloading. Well that depends entirely on how tidy you are! Personally, I'm scrupulously tidy on my Mac! I have created a folder on my HD called "Internet Downloads" and download everything to it. From there, I can copy things to wherever they need to be. Downloading to your desktop can make for a very messy desktop.

Try this:
Go to your User folder – you know: the one where you have folders called "Desktop", "Documents", "Library", "Movies", etc. Create a new folder there called "Internet Downloads". Now go into the Preferences of Internet Explorer and click on "Download Options" (under the "Receiving Files" tab). At the top of that dialog box, you will see "Download Folder" with a button called "Change Location…". Click on that, navigate to the downloads folder you have just created and then click on the "Choose" button. Just below that, you will see two radio buttons. Make sure that the "Always download files to the download folder" is checked. Now click on "OK" to save the new preferences.

Voilà! Every time you download a file, it will go straight into that folder, keeping your desktop far tidier.

Hope that helps! Keep in touch and let me know if you have any problems with the suggestions I have made.

I thank you for all the helpful advise. I won't bother with anymore updating. You convinced me. My computer is a mess. I do intend to set up my files so that one day I can also learn to put the various files on disk. That's another issue. I've just been afraid to do certain things. Because we are on vacation and have had loads of company, I haven't been able to sit at this computer as much as I would have wanted, BUT I WILL, at some point.

My present problem I think is major. After I printed all the message you gave me (I'm happy my printer was working then!) I was doing more printing and I think I gave it one too many commands. I went to the print center several times. I must have done something wrong because the printer name is no longer listed. I could no longer print. I checked "find" but there were "O" results. I checked the trash just in case but it wasn't there.

Finally I had a chat today with HP about my HP 5550 inkjet printer. I was told to go to print center. Click on "ADD" and retype the name of the printer. When I did that, the cursor doesn't go on for me to type anything. Can you help me find it? I left my disk in Florida! Therefore, I can't uninstall and reinstall.

Hi Joelle,

Maybe it's an HP thing, but I haven't come across a "Print Center". But try this:

First, ensure that your printer is connected to your Mac and switched on. Then restart your Mac.

Go to your "applications" folder. In there you should see another folder called "Utilities", where you will find the "Printer Setup Utility". Double click on that and you will get a window called "Printer List". (Please bear in mind here that I am running OS X10.3.9, so your window may not be called exactly that.)

Click on the "Add" icon. When I do that, I get a drop-down dialog which shows me the Local AppleTalk Zone and the printers I have available there.

I'm assuming that your printer is connect by USB, so if that option is shown, click on the drop-down menu and select USB. You should then see your printer listed in the window. Click on it once in the window to ensure that it is highlighted.

Below that window, you should see another drop-down menu called "Printer Model". Leave it on "Auto Select".

Then click on the "Add" button. When you do that, it should go through the process of connecting to your printer. Hopefully it will find the driver it needs by searching through your Library.

That should do the trick.

If the Printer Setup Utility can't find the printer driver it needs and you don't have the installer disk available (it'll be under 8ft of water now!), then you will have to download it. If the following URL doesn't show up as a link when you read this message, then you will have to copy it and paste it into your browser.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...t=71896&os=219

It's a big file at nearly 40Mb, so be patient! That will reinstall your full printer setup for your HP 5550 printer.

Hope that helps!

At this time I thank you once more. I'm into supper prep now but later one this evening, I'll do as instructed. It'll be a bit harder to do this I think because I won't have t he printed instructions in my hand. I'll have to rely on keeping it on the desk top.

I do have one more question though, since I have your attention. I had read earlier the uninstall and reinstall instructions. With your help I won't have to follow them but it did say to turn off any virus program I have. I never installed any but was told there was one on this computer. What is it called so I can find it?

Thanking you in advance.

Hi again, Joelle,

If you have a .Mac account, then chances are that you will have Virex installed. Unfortunately, I use Norton Anti-Virus and have no experience of Virex.

But it should be a simple matter of looking in your Applications folder (it may be in the Utilities folder), running the application by double-clicking on it and looking for a button or icon that will turn virus-protection off.

If you try to add the printer the way I have described above, you will not need to turn virus protection off, though. You will only need to to so if you have to re-install the full HP product.

Don't forget to turn it back on afterwards, though to ensure that you don't catch any nasty bugs! ;-)

Now we are suffering from the ol' time zone problem again. It's past 9.00pm here in the UK and I'm still at work – trying to help another American with his Mac problems –*and was planning to go home some time soon! But if yo have any further questions, feel free to post them, wven though I won't be able to reply to them until tomorrow.

What's for dinner? And just what ARE these Hominy Grits that I keep hearing about from your side of the Pond? By way of a small charge for my services, I may have to insist that you send me a recipe! ;-)

I did as you said and it's WORKING!!!! I am SO happy.

Grits is something I don't cook since my husband is diabetic and I watch the amount of carbohydrates he consumes. Anyway, the next time you are eating corn, take a look at the base of one kernel...You'll see a white speck there. That's what it is! I did find a recipe and if you are still interested after you know you can purchase a box of "quick cooking" grits where you are, good heavens....the UK, I'll be glad to print out the recipe for you.

I will be busy for the next few days again since a grandson is making a 12 hour trip up here but when I find time in between, I'll start going thru all the other advise you gave, I promise. Thank you, Joelle
