Description:
I have just installed a cable modem, and although it is considerably faster, I understand that MacOS 8.5 will improve internet speed. (I have 8.1 presently) Is that true? by how much? is it worth the price? where can I get it?
Thanks

Hello Doug,
MacOS 8.5 does improve internet access bandwidth a little bit. As far as I've seen on my 56k modem I connect at a higher rate more often and speed seems to be better than with 8.1. At work with 8.5 on a few systems we have experienced much quicker file transfer speeds across the network and over the internet.
Its not really easy to say how much of a difference in speed. But I dont think its a dramatic increase but more like a modest one as far as my 56k modem.
I like 8.5 much more than 8.1. It runs very nicely and doesnt give me any problems. Some things seem a bit faster, and some seem a tad slower but it has some handy features that I've come to enjoy. Such as the auto disk first aid if shut down improperly, Sherlock, Remote access integration with network and internet settings, new system profiler and it just seems more stable than 8.1 was. Is it worth the price? It really depends. I think it is. I ordered mine before it was shipping from MacMall and received it the day MacOS 8.5 was released.
Where can you find it? Well I saw a few copies at the local Best Buy store and you can order it from many different mail order suppliers like MacMall and MacZone.
