Is there a reason why websites that use .mht pages cannot be browsed by IE for OSX?

Is there some plug-in or alternate browser that will permit someone using Tiger to access .mht pages?

Help.

Hi, Aaron,

Welcome to macosx.com.

Multipart HTML, or .mht files are a compressed format containing text and graphics of a web page, often used for archiving pages.

They are more common in the Windoze world, and do not seem to be supported by any current Mac browser, but Graphic Converter from version 5.5 onward (http://www.lemkesoft.com/en/graphcon.htm)can generally open a downloaded .mht file.

If you have Microsoft Entourage, you can change the extension of the .mht file to .eml in the finder (eg example.mht to example.eml) and Entourage should be able to open the file. (works OK for me)

If you have neither of these programs, there is a slightly messy way to do it with Stuffit Expander which I can explain if necessary.

Please let me know if this helps, and do not hesitate to ask if you need further help or clarification.

Cheers,
Alex.

Sorry, just to clarify: Graphic Converter can open, view and save the graphic files in a .mht file, but to view the text as well, Entourage or the (slightly messy but not scary) Stuffit Expander method are called for.

The slightly messy way is:

1. create a new folder on the desktop with a handy name;

2. control-click on .mht file, select 'open with', then 'other', navigate to 'Stuffit Expander', click 'open';

3. expand file into handy-named folder;

4. open the first file in handy folder (eg example.mht.attachment00) with TextEdit. This will be the web page without graphics (grey boxes instead of pics).

5. rename the other files in handy folder (eg example.mht.attachment01, example.mht.attachment02 etc) by adding .gif to the end of each filename.

6. drag each of the renamed files into the top of your open TextEdit file. Save and/ or print.

The layout won't be perfect, but it should be useable/fixable.

Again, thanks for using macosx.com and let me know if this has answered your question, or if you need more help or explanation.

Cheers, Alex

Thanks for the advice.

I have not been able to test it yet but it seems promising.
The other thing I am looking in to is alternate web code that might be more generally accessable.
