I found your site from a search on "invalid B-tree node fix 10.3" there was a post with the subject Question - Snow Imac Startup Failure dated Jul 10 2005, 5:15pm. I am having a similar problem.
My set up, I have a G4 iMac (the first 15" flat screen version) 60G HD partition 20G & 40G the 20G partition running the system & apps. and the 40G for file storage. I also a G4 Powerbook both running Panther. I have not switched to Tiger after the problems I had with the first versions of Jaguar & Panther. I do however run and intall software updates. Last but not least I have a USB2/firewire 250G external HD. I use my Powerbook daily (wireless) and don't really use the iMac that often.
About two weeks ago I went online with the iMac and found that I needed to update the software with 2 security updates. Upon restart I was greeted with the spinning circle forever, so I shut it down with the power button. When powered on again, I first had the start up chime which I had disabled I then had a blank grey screen & then a broken folder icon with a flashing question mark. I then booted from the 10.3 intallation disc and ran Disk Utility. It show the entire 60G HD(no partition) but the verify & repair options were grey. The only available function was erase. I had luckily just backed up the 40G partition days before & have all the install discs for the OS & apps. so I tried to run the install disc and there was no drive to install to. I suspected a problem with the security updates(previous external firewire HD fried with an update), after reading Apples site and finding no trace of any similar problems I tried to instal the OS to the external HD and boot from that but it still does not start up. I tried to boot from the Disk Warrior disc & the Tech Tools Pro discs but again no start up.
I today decided to erase. I then had the ability to verify & repair I ran verification and the drive failed verification with the following:"Invalid B-Tree node size", Error: Underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972). I stopped to do some research on the error message "invalid B-tree node". While the Apple site has nothing I found tons of user complaints on the web, most of which did not involve the start up disk until the one I found here. I have not run repair but from what I have read it sounds like it wouldn't help and I don't know if it will make it worse. What do you suggest?
Thanks!,
Tamara

Tamara, welcome on macosx.com
(1) Which version of DiskWarrior do you have ?
(2) When you said you cannot boot from DW disc, do you inster the DW disc in the imac then reboot while holding the "C" key (C means boot on CD) until you'll see a backgroung whith DW logos ?
(3) if you can boot from DW, does DW shows you in its main -and sole- window you internal drive to repair or not ?
(4) which release of panther do you run ?
Regards
Philippe

I am using DW 3, Yes I inserted the CD into to the the CD/DVD drive, power off, then power on while holding down the c key. The grey screen with the apple logo and winding circle never stop. I am using Panther 10.3.9.

Tamara, on my olg G3 400 Mhz 380Ram, DW302 takes between 5 to 8 minutes to boot.
You said that you nooted form the 10.3 installation disc and repair.
So i do not see why you cannot boot on DW ???

I can put the DW CD in, hold the c key down, and I have waited 20 minutes and the grey screen with the apple logo and winding circle never stop. If I release the c key after about 10 minutes a blank grey screen appears for about a minute then the blue wallpaper desktop appears completely blank for about 5 minutes then the computer restarts itself and repeats the same process starts over and over and over.

But, you cazn boot normally from the Mac Osx install disc, right ?
How long does it take ?
Which release of DW do you have ? 3.02 ? 3.03 ?
Is the burned surface of the disc dirty, scratched ?
