I hope this question does not sound too naive but I have a G4 mac and I have recently upgraded my system software to Tiger. I still run my old system OS 9.2 in Classic but kept getting up "start up disc is full, delete some files", so I have invested in a Maxmini 160gb hardrive which I have now installed and the icon is now on my desk top. I want to install Tiger on the Maxmini, so do I have to reinstall it or is there an easier way?
I would appreciate your advice.

I'm not entirely clear what you want to do...do you want to run Classic from the Maxmini, boot primarily from the Maxmini, or what? In any case, you could reload OSX onto the Maxmini from the discs, or clone your current drive onto the external drive. There are several programs for this. Carbon Copy Cloner will do what you want, make the external drive bootable, and is free. SuperDuper is a very nice cloning program. You can clone for free, and if you want more advanced backup features, you can pay for the program.

Thanks for you prompt reply.
Sorry to sound a bit vague (or thick) but I want to take off Tiger from my original hardrive and boot it up from my Maxmini so that I have only one system on each hardrive. By reloading the Tiger would I have to reset my internet preferences etc?

So you want to have OS 9 on your internal drive, and Tiger on the external? Or, if I misunderstand, what do you have on the G4 internal drive?
In any case, if you use either of the methods above, you will have an identical, bootable version of your internal drive on your Maxmini, including preferences, internet settings, etc. It will be identical. If things boot OK from the external drive, I suppose you could boot from the external drive always. This will have some problems at times. You wouldn't be able to run some programs like Bootcamp from an external drive; I'm not sure the computer would update its software correctly. But I don't think there's any reason you couldn't do that?
What is the size of your internal drive? Did you have any thoughts to upgrade internally, or add a second internal drive? What I'd ideally like to see is a big internal hard drive, perhaps in 2 partitions, osx and os9, with the Maxmini as a backup drive.
But I think your plan is plausible.
