I have a Mac G4 Quicksilver running OSX 10.3.9. I bought an Iomega Super DVD writer 16X dual format USB 2.0 External, believing that it would play DVDs on my computer. It does not, and Iomega tells me that I need to get software to do this. They do not recommend any particular software. I am torn between returning the device to Frys or trying to locate the software which will let me use the device to play DVDs as well as to burn them. If you can give me a recommendation, it will help me to figure out what to do. Thanks, Bill

Bill,
is the DVD writer internal or external? If internal: did you install 10.3 after installing the DVD writer?

Did this answer your question(s)?

Alan, the DVD writer is external, and my OSX 10.3.9 was already installed. I simply connected the DVD writer, ran the Iomega software CD for installation, and then tried to play a DVD, but it just spit it out. Then I called Iomega Tech Support and was told that I needed to get third party software. My computer has an internal CD reader/burner, so it needs an external device for DVD. So I still need help. Do you have the application "DVD Player" in your Applications folder?

No, I have no applications which deal with DVD. Bill

OK, first you need to extract "DVD PLayer" from your Panther system CD to your Desktop using Pacifist
http://www.charlessoft.com/Pacifist.dmg . Then drag the extracted "DVD Player" to your /Applications folder.
You should now be able to use "DVD Player" to PLAY DVDs. I'm not quite sure if you can BURN DVDs with Disk Utility. So it may be you have to get software as Iomega recommends.
Personally I got an internal DVD writer (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D) which I built in where the CD drive was. This works very well on my system: G4 Quicksilver 733 MHz, Panther 10.3.9. If you want to get an internal drive (and bring the Iomega back) be sure to get a drive which is compatible to your system, which means you will be able to boot from it and burn DVD/CDs using the software installed with the system.
