Please can you tell me if there is a way of printing a photo(s) with text from the comment box. (Also am I right in saying the comment box has unlimited space). Also is there a way of saving a photo AND its comment as a PDF?
I have just spent 2 and a half hours downloading iphoto 5.04 only to find that its not workable on anything less than a MAC. OSX 10.3.4. My machine is 10.3.3!!! Is it really this close and not usable? Is there anything I can do to utilise the upgrade?? Thank you. bronwen

Bronwen,
As far as I know there is no automatic way of printing photos with text from the comment box. One way which may be useful to you is to create an iphoto book. You can tweak the appearance of the book pages to a useful degree. Once you have set up a book page to how you like it you can print that page on its own if you like (select print then enter the page number range such as page 1 to 1 or page 4 to 8 etc). This way you would be able to enter some text - even copy and paste text from the comments pane - though perhaps not as flexible as you would like.
I think you can have as much text in the comment fields as you like though of course things could get unmanageable if you enter too much!
As for PDF... You can make a pdf of anything that you can print. Its a very similar process - simply click the pdf button in the print dialogue box after selecting print from the file menu. If you find printing pages from an iPhoto book (as mentioned above) works for you then you can also save to pdf this way. Of course, if you can't print the way you want to then you wont be able to make a pdf of what you want either :-(
Regarding your download of iphoto 5.04. I'm afraid you will need to update your system software. The good news that this is free and it wont cost you any money to update. Indeed you will be able to update right up to 10.3.9. This will make you more compatible generally and you may well appreciate the "extras" and tweaks to the system contained in the updates.
I appreciate that if you have only a dial-up internet connection this may prove a lengthy download but it is possible to download the updates from apple.com on another, broadband equipped machine - even a PC - if you have access to one.
Sorry about my answers - it feels I've delivered nothing but bad news!
Feel free to get back to me if I can help you further.
regards
Tom

Tom. Thanks for actually a positive response, as it sounds like I am going to be able to use the upgraded iphoto. However, I have clicked on Software Update (under Apple logo) and 10 items are listed.... Apple Remote Desktop, garage band, ical, ichat, idvd, imovie, ipod, isync, itunes, and finally at the bottom Mac osxUpdate combined. Well I assume this is the one I go for - not that I am interested in having updates for any of the listed above, but is the particular update for up to 10.3.9 included in the massive package.... or am I up a gum/apple tree?
I havent had time to try out the other advice you gave me, and while appreciating that I cant do what I asked specifically about, you have given me useful info. that is sort of in the same ball park. So thank you very much - most especially if the above really brings me iphoto.
Do you infact have experience of iphoto versus, photoshop or other applications. If you do I would appreciate your comments/guidance re getting others if appropriate. warm wishes Bronwen

Bronwen,
Quick answer... yes, just go for the MacosUpdate combined and that should bring you up to 10.3.9
I would recommend you update idvd and imovie too. Assuming you have a mac capable of writing to DVD that is! These apps can work with iphoto - you can make a slide show in iphoto and put it onto a dvd to play in a dvd player for eg. If these apps are not up-to-date then you may find some functionality will be missing. To be honest you might as well update everything! you shouldn't loose any settings etc.
I would also strongly advise you repair permissions before any updates...
launch diskutility located in Utilities folder in the applications folder. select your system drive listed on the left of the window and click "repair permissions". just let the software do its thing. It can only do good to your system. You should do this procedure every month or so and before (and after!) major software installs.
Also important...If you have a firewire disk drive connected to your computer, disconnect it before and during the update. Only re-connect after the update is done.
In my experience iPhoto is just the best software for organising your pictures. Its ease of use is second to non in my opinion. The editing features are simple but work brilliantly. The other software you may wish to try is iView's MediaPro. info here...
http://www.iview-multimedia.com/index.php
This software has a few more "professional" features and consequently tends to be favoured by the more professional user. I have mediapro and iphoto but I find iphoto does everything I want and is easier to use.
Photoshop is very different to iphoto. iPhoto is designed to organise and catalogue all your photos while photoshop is designed to edit photos. Photoshop is very powerful, can do amazing things but is consequently very complicated. With photoshop you just open a picture file from your hard disk, do your edits and then save the file back to your hard disk - it is not designed to manage and organise your photos like iphoto. Some may use photoshop with iphoto, preferring to make any picture edits in photoshop rather than iphoto. Use photoshop for complex edits like darkening a sky, without affecting the tree in a landscape pic, or changing the colour of someone's lipstick in a portrait. Those perfect-skin models on the front of cosmo will certainly have been photoshopped! Great software but note the manual is thicker than a bible!
If you want to combine your pictures with text you may be better off using a page layout package to do this. Adobe Indesign is the professional way to go, as used in the print industry but even word processors can usually handle photos. Appleworks is not good at this by the way, but Word and Apple's Pages are ok.
Hope this helps. feel free to get back to me if you need further help

Tom. Thank you for an immensely helpful and supportive reply. V. especially re iphoto. What a reassurance!
I have after a phenomenol 14 hours upgraded to OSX 10.3.9 smoothly.
However, lifes never straightforward. I now cant get the ihpoto 5.0.4 installed.
On the screen is iphoto 504.dmg and iphoto 5.0.4. The dmg. one when double clicked doesnt do anything. Well never mind. So then I double click on 5.0.4. Iphoto 504 pkg comes up in window. Double click and another window comes up saying installer package needs to run a programme to determine if it can be installed. click continue. 504 cant be installed. AN ELIGIBLE IPHOTO APPLICATION COULD NOT BE FOUND IN APPLICATIONS. Damn. Now just to complicate things I have landed up with my existing iphoto on HD, on Pictures, and on Applications, and I'm nervous to trash any of them incase I lose 8000 pics!!! BUT iphoto is there in applications so why the above problem. Frustration frustration and my own ignorance/stupidity, but after all that downloading I am so near and so far from materialising 5.0.4. Sorry to be so dim..... Can you brighten the gloom? Thanks

Bronwen,
Your photos are stored in a folder called "iPhoto Library". This is located in your "Pictures" folder in your home folder. Feel free to have a look in there but you will find you photos are organised in a slightly strange folder system - which typically only makes sense to iphoto. Upset or change this structure and you will confuse iphoto so look but don't change! The point is your photos should be quite safe - even if you delete every application of iphoto! If you can burn the "iphoto Library" folder to CD or DVD then you can relax with the thought that your pics are truly backed up!
If you have iphoto in your applications folder then deleting the files on your desktop should cause no loss. Just try putting the stuff in the trash and before you empty the trash try launching iphoto from the applications folder - everything should work fine. Once you've confirmed this you can empty the trash with confidence.
The .dmg file is a diskimage file. When launched this file will create a virtual disk on your desktop - if you drag this to the trash you will see the trash turns into an eject icon like it would with real hard disks. Double click the .dmg file and the disk will return. This virtual disk will contain the iphoto installer.
When you double click this installer and get that message I fear this is because you have a version of iphoto that is prior to version 5. You can check this: go to you applications folder and locate iphoto in there. click once on the application to select it then go to the file menu and select "get info". This will bring up a window with info about the iphoto application. In here you can read what version you have. If you have less than version 5 (eg v4.x) you will not be able to update to version 5.0.4. Apple charge to go from v4 to v5 - iphoto 5 is part of iLife 05 and if you do not have this you have to buy it from Apple. Its £50 in the UK. personally I think its worth every penny if you enjoy using Iphoto - there are some great new features with the latest version. And of course you get the latest versions of iMovie, iDVD and Garageband too.
I am assuming you computer is not too old though. More up-to-date software is always more demanding on your computer. Any G4 computer will be fine. It will work on a G3 imac for eg but you may notice it being bit slow sometimes.
Sorry if this is all a bit frustrating/disappointing.
For the record, the software update feature you've used before will also update iphoto to the most up-to-date version possible. From what you've told me, I should have guessed where all this was heading! oops. No harm done though and its good to have the OS more up-to-date. Now you just need to decide whether you want to spend £50 on iLife 05.
regards
Tom
