Hello Bob,
My second question is proving a great diffulculty for me. I want to put 100 photos onto a CD so they can be developed economically at the local shop. I have tried twice now and each time my iPhoto application says there are 100 photos but the shop machine says there are many more. The shop staff said the first time that many of the photos were in folders making the printing process much more expensive. So for the next CD I was careful to drag and drop from the Photo Library only. I have read the instructions and cannot work out what I am doing wrongly. I have a digital camera and am very pleased with the iPhoto functions. I do hope you can help me sort this out.
Many thanks,
Win

Hi Win,
Are you using iPhoto 5?
Here is a surefire way to get just the image on the disk, and you can be sure it will just put one copy. (I think before, it was also creating thumbnails of the photos).
First, Make a folder on your Desktop called 'Photos' (you'll see why in a sec).
Now, open iPhoto, select the pictures you want, then go the the iPhoto menu and choose SHARE->Export.
When the new dialog box pops up, choose:
FILE EXPORT (should be the leftmost tab)
and under Format, choose: Original.
Under Size, choose: Full-Size images.
Under Name, choose: Use Filename, and make sure use extension is Checked.
Click EXPORT
Now, a box will pop up asking where you want to save these - simply select the folder you created on your desktop.
.
After it exports, quit iPhoto, open the folder on your desktop, and all of your fullsize/quality images will be in the folder.
Now just burn the folder to a blank CD-R and take it to your photo place.
Let me know if you need any further instruction.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Thank you Johnathan, I have the images now in a folder on my desktop. But I have another question: it seems some of the photos appear as tiny photos and others are in the jpeg format, is this correct? Should I go ahead and burn them to disk or is there something else I need to know? Thanks, Win
one1step1 - Oct 30, 2005 - 4:23 pm
Win, the smaller ones are probably thumbnails, for previewing them. Did you do the Export FILE , or did you do the Export web page? Export file should give just the images, but the export web page will give you the images and thumbnails. If you did web page, there is probably an html file in the folder somewhere.
Let me know what you come up with.

Hello,
No I did not do anything with a web page, I had printed your instructions and followed them quite carefully (Ithink!) and there were no problems with the proceedure.
When I double click the images in the folder they all come onto the screen as jpgs, they are either a tiny photo image or just the jpg logo and the photo number. I must be making a fundamental error somewhere. Win
one1step1 - Oct 30, 2005 - 10:57 pm
Not exactly sure what went wrong, but
as long as you do just do the bigger images at the development place,
they should turn out OK.
Wouldn't hurt to give it a try one more time as well, and see if you came up with
the same results.
Good luck

Jonathon! I see they want to close this , but I am not finished. Wiil have another go with a folder to desktop and get back in touch with you. It might be a day or two. Thanks, Win
one1step1 - Nov 1, 2005 - 8:10 pm
Don't worry about it Win,
I accidentially hit the close, and I didn't know how to bring it back, it puts it in a 'recent' folder on my end.
as long as you keep replying its fine.
thanks-Jonathan

Dear Jonathan,
It has taken me a while to get back to these photos. The effort required to choose the correct 100 for sending to friends who insist on hard copies is considerable. Once again I followed your instructions carefully and less than half the photos show as pictures, the remaining ones are in jpg format. I really cannot work it out, some photos were taken on the same day, same reel of film, and loaded into my Mac at the same time yet come up in these two different formats.
Now I am urgently in need of help! Looking forward to hearing from you,
Win

Win,
Are you on a high speed internet connection such as a cable modem or DSL?
If so, I can help you remotely, via our 'Help' application. Are you familiar with that?
I need to be able to see the steps that you are taking.
Odds are your pictures are already in jpg (jpeg) format and this is the size you want. I am not sure why you see two different formats. Did you use a digital camera for these.. or did you scan them in?

Hi, Yes I use digital camera; no I am not familiar with your Help application; and yes I have the ADSL with WIFI or something (wireless). My Mac is fairly new and I also am fairly new to computers. I do enjoy it all and look forward to learning more. Yes all the photos are in jpg format, some of them have to be clicked to reveal the image others are in the folder as a picture. I have classes shortly so perhaps will catch you later this evening (for me). Win

Hi Win,
I can help you remotely. Since I am unable to see what is happening, I will need to be able to access the machine.
http://www.macosx.com/apps/help.htm
Go to our page above, and follow the instructions.
We will need to communicate to set it up via Instant Messenger.
Do you have iChat setup? If so, you can add me as a contact.
My screenname is:
mactipsdaily
Try and send me a message, and I am sure we can get you fixed up. Or send me your screenname, and I will send you a message when I am at the computer.
Thanks, Jonathan

No, no iChat - would you believe it? I mucked up my name somehow and now I cannot get it to work. I use Skype to talk to and instant message friends in Australia. Do you have Skype? it was much more simple for me to get my head around. Oh dear is this going to be a pain? Win
Winifred Scarfe - Nov 4, 2005 - 11:16 am
Well ... I looked at iChat again and I seem to have a few little screens, how do I enter you? is it just
mactipsdaily@mac.com? Then what? Oh dear! ...
Winifred Scarfe - Nov 4, 2005 - 11:19 am
My Mac membership name is winifredannscarfe and that seemed to work with iChat today.
one1step1 - Nov 4, 2005 - 12:07 pm
Win,
I added you to my list. I tried to send you a message.
To add me, in the iChat window at the bottom left hand corner, there is a '+'
Click on it, choose 'Add Buddy', choose 'New Person',
under 'Account type' choose 'AIM'
and under 'screenname' enter 'mactipsdaily'
without the apostrophes of course.
Then once I am added, simply click on my name and send a message.
iChat in my opinion is very similar to Skype, and simpler as well.

I am off to a class now. Will try again about 8.30 pm Euro time and see if you are there. How do I send the instant chat message? I have two little ballons from you and know where to type mine in, but cannot see how to send. My Mac mates will be soooo pleased if I work this out. However I tend to think I need to do one thing at a time! Win
one1step1 - Nov 4, 2005 - 12:20 pm
You just press enter, or send/allow.. whatever the message said.

Hello,
I wonder if I can speak with Jonathan again, we were well on the way to sorting this some time ago. I have since been on an intensive course so had to leave it.
Tonight Itried to put the photos in a folder on Desktop following your instructions carefully: SHARE->Export; then FILE EXPORT and Format

riginal;size; Full Size images; under name:Use filename and Extension checked. It gives me a few thumbnails and a lot of jpg folders. My photo developers charge much more if they are in folders.
So, I still need help please.
Thanks,
Win

Not sure why this is happening.... I would have to see it.
Are you using iPhoto 5? I asked previously, but didn't get a response.
Let me know.
Thanks,
jonathan

Yes it is iPhoto 5 perhaps we can catch up later today. I will keep an eye out for a message from you. Thanks, Win

So, what am I to do? Is there some way I can check the properties of each photo in the library? before I transfer them? sounds long and complicated and perhaps it is impossible. Do let me know.
Thanks, Win
one1step1 - Dec 26, 2005 - 9:24 am
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.
Win,
Try just exporting 1, 2 or 3 photos as a test run. See if you end up with the same results.
Check the properties of each one before you export it out of iPhoto. Then when they are exported check the properties again.
To do this, you can get the properties of a file, you select a picture, hold down COMMAND and press I. Also available from the 'Photos->Get Info' menu.
Let me know if this helps!

Thanks Jonathan,
It does seem to work if I transfer 1 or 2 at a time. But there are some that will not transfer as thumbnails at all, they persist in their folder, for the moment I will leave them out. My next problem is the numbers: there are many downloads of photos so the numbers duplicate of course. The system does not allow for this even though the dates are different. What can I do?
Thanks,
Win

I would create an Album with the ones you want to export, then when you choose them to export, instead of 'Use Filename' do a 'Use album name'. Or you could add titles to the photos, and choose 'Use Titles' when exporting.
Try it with one or two, and give it a go.
Let me know if this helps!

Winifred Scarfe - Dec 26, 2005 - 5:24 pm
Well ... using a file name has worked well. However some of the best (most wanted photos) are refusing to transfer as thumbnails, even doing it singly makes no difference. I really need to work it out ... patience and perseverance I suppose. I have stopped taking photos lately, I am so disappointed with my inability to manage this process. Oh dear ... !! Win
Winifred Scarfe - Dec 27, 2005 - 7:19 am
And I keep thinking of something else ... when in Italy recently I had my photos downloaded to CD. None of these can be transfered to the desktop album as thumbnails. Can I change them somehow to enable that to occur? Thanks, Win
one1step1 - Dec 27, 2005 - 9:48 am
Why do you want them as thumbnails, am I missing something?
Winifred Scarfe - Dec 27, 2005 - 9:55 am
If I am to take the photos on a CD to the local shop for developing they charge me more if they are in a folder, if they are just little photos (thumbnails?) it is best. Win
one1step1 - Dec 27, 2005 - 1:17 pm
Hi Win,
That doesn't make sense, but perhaps in you area, they do things differently.
The thumbnail is a low resolution photo not suitable for printing with any quality. If you look back into this questions history, I believe in Oct 30, you said they were coming out as thumbnails, and that wasn't the result you were looking for.
I will put this question back into the que, and perhaps someone from your parts can pick it up.
Good Luck,
Jonathan
philippe99 - Dec 28, 2005 - 6:24 am
Win, the easiest way (my opinion):
* put all wanted photos in a new album
* select the album then, in the Toolbar above: Shared > Burn the disc
* after inserting a blank CD-R, you'll see in the bottom of the album photo window, a area in which you can define the CD's name and launch the burning process
* burn
Your burned CD's structure will be:
iPhotoLibrary > (year)Folder -and other file to ignore- > (month)Folder > (day)Folder
In the (day)Folder, you'll see all your full jpg files for printing -and the Thumbs sub-directory of thumbnails-
Now, put on a paper all the directory structure of your CD your photo labo will have to browse through to arrive to the full jpg list
