My iPod Photo has suddenly refused to allow music to be added to it. This behavior happens only on my G5, on my MacBook Pro all is normal. I'm assuming some kind of synchronization problem. Both Macs are set to manually update the iPod and have worked fine in the past. Both Macs are running Tiger 10.4.8, the iPod 1.2.1 and the Macs have all the latest updates. All I have done so was to trash the iPod preferences.

Thanks

Hello,

I want you to run Disk Utility to Verify that the iPod doesn't have any Errors on it. Here's how to do that.

Connect your iPod to the G5. Now, launch Disk Utility. It's located here;
MacintoshHD/Applications/Utilities. Select your iPod in the panel on the left. Now, click the Verify button. Takes less then a minute to run. It will report errors on the drive if they exist. Now, if it reports errors, just click Repair. In most cases, Disk Utility can repair the problem. Now, with Disk Utility still open, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left and click Repair Disk Permissions. This can fix a myriad of bugs on a Mac. Now, disconnect the iPod and reboot the G5. When your Desktop loads, reconnect the iPod and see if you can audio tracks without a problem. If the problem still persists,
try the following:

How to update iPod for Macintosh

Download and install the latest version of iTunes. When you have the latest version, use the iTunes menus to check for updates. On the Mac choose File > Check for Updates.
Connect your iPod to your Mac using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod and open iTunes if it is not already open.
In order to be updated on a Mac, your iPod must be formatted for a Mac. If it is not, you will not be able to update your iPod, only restore. In this case, please read the this article before proceeding. If you are unsure of your iPod's format, read this article.
If iTunes detects that a newer version of iPod software is available for your model, you will be prompted to download and install the new version. If the newest software has already been downloaded you may be prompted to install it.
Depending on the model iPod you have and whether you are using a USB or FireWire port to connect your iPod, you may be asked to leave you iPod attached to the computer for the update to complete or you may be asked to connect the iPod to the iPod Power Adapter that came with your iPod. Be sure to follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update (Note: not all iPod models come with an iPod Power Adapter).
During the update process, you will notice an Apple logo and progress bar appear on the iPod display (Note: this may be difficult to see since the iPod's backlight will be turned off). Once this is completed, you can resume normal use of your iPod. If you notice a different icon on the iPod screen read this article and the follow the related instructions.

Also, here is the link for Apple's iPod Support and Service:

If you need further assistance, please post back and thanks for choosing Macosx.com!

Regards,
Carolyn :-)

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I had already run Disk Utility and it passes verification OK. And I do already have iTunes 7.02 installed.

Thanks

HI Keith,

Boy, you're already so good at trouble shooting you're making me work here .

Do you happen to remember the last track or photo you added to your iPod? In iTunes you can select Recently Added and that will give you a list of the most recently added tracks. Same with video. Anything that you did recently... drag them out of the Library onto your Desktop. Have you Imported tracks from a CD recently? I'm thinking this is either a corrupted track or image or a sync problem so I'm trying to eliminate one at a time.

If need be, can you back up everything on your iPod and Restore it? That's a last resort but it always works for me.

Carolyn :-)

Hi Carolyn,

Your call on a corrupted file seems to be the winner. I deleted the last two CDs I added and it updated my new podcasts and I added another CD. Funny, nearly 5000 songs on my Mac with 4 years of iPod use and I never had a bad file.

Thank you for your help
