This may be a very simple question but I am new to macs and I am thinking of purchasing an ipod. I have noticed that the ipod is only compatible with OSX is this true? I have OS9.2 running on a G4, your comments would be appreciated.

No, unfortunately you do need Mac OS X to use an iPod.
It is one of Apple's pushes to get people to move to Mac OS X, which is fair enough, you don't know what your missing!
The only way you can use an iPod is to get OS X.
Hope this helps,
William

Thanks for your help but by upgrading to OSX will I have to replace my present software which are pretty old versions of Photoshop and Quark - which would be expensive for me?

When you upgrade to OS X, there is a thing called the Classic Evironment, it allows you to run the old Mac porgrams (that work in OS 9) in OS X.
You just install the programs like normal and when you open the application, it basically enters OS 9 and allows you to use the program. When you quit the program, your computer returns to OS X.
Hope this helps,
William

Thanks for the reply, that has answered a few questions for me as I had been told by other people that my software would have to be replaced.
I presume I will be able to run OSX on my G4 and what sort of price can I expect to pay to upgrade?
Thanks again,
David Dukes.

You won't need to do any hardware upgrades, you will only need to buy OSX.
I presume you live in America (I don't) so in US dollars, Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) costs around $129. You can check out Tiger by visiting
'www.apple.com/macosx'.
Good luck with your iPod,
William
