OK... I have a 40GB iPod... when I plug it in to my computer, it shows as being full, (i.e. 37.X GB full) and it shows up in iTunes with 2.X GB available... BUT the library for it is empty, and nothing sees the files that are on it. I have sent the program to DiskUtility for OSx, and it says there is nothing wrong. do I have any hope of being able to retreive access to the music files stored there, or should I just wipe it clean as there is no hope for the data? DiskUtility says "everything is fine" with that disk. I put the thing into forced disk mode and ran it again, with a similar result. I could wipe it, and re-install the OS stuff, but I do NOT have my CDs with me to attempt to re-fit my music files ONTO it.

Where is the computer that has all the music that you transferred to this iPod?

*that* computer is is at my home in Arizona, and I am on a road trip to the east coast. I am in Vermont now. I would like to ba able to listen to these songs in the car as I drive back to Arizona, but I seem to be unable to do that. is the _ANY_ method of attempting to access my files on this thing? I do have a CD player in the car, but I did not bring them with me as I have them all on an iPod that I can listen to all of them without having to drag them all with me.

Have you tried the various hints on this Apple support page?
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/basics/
I have heard of good results with DiskWarrior on the iPod, but I'm not sure if that would be a recommended procedure, or just a waste of $80 as a test.
If you get somewher close to an Apple Store, they may have a way to backup and restore, or get your iPod playing tunes again....

well, I may as well try whatever I can that does not cost anything first. The iPod acts as if it is full of data, but it shows me nothing in iTunes. I can add mp3/aac files TO it , but they only show up.. they have no effect on anything else that already exists there.. if it is not there, why does it say that my iPod is full of data? I am just sick of trying to deal with solutions to my problems. I have had this problem while I had played a few audio files that my machine completely freezes up.. the mouse locks, the clock stops, and the little blip of audio repeats. I believe that this sort of this DID NOT happen with macos x, but lucky me.. I may as well bend over so I get *bleeped* easily. I am just a little irritated with everything being screwed up and NO solutions posisble about anything. I am almost ready to throw this damn laptop out the window with all of the attachments I stupidly bought for it.

I apologize...
I thought that the iPod was not working, and I reread your post...
The iPod is not designed to transfer songs BACK to a computer. Only one way, from computer to iPod. If you plug in to a Mac, the Mac should ask about transferring music TO the iPod (and would replace everything on the iPod in that case.)
There are other possibilities. A possible solution is this software.

You can also search at versiontracker.com for 'ipod.itunes', and you'll see a long list of apps, some of which might help you.
Hope this helps

thank you for these tips of places to look. I will let it go to the side as I have a few external (non-computer) related things to deal with, but I shall give it a look. I am not caring about copying the music to my machine or anywhere else, but what I do have in mind is TRYING TO SAVE WHAT IS ON THERE so I get something to listen to while I drive back west.

actually I do have some music on the drive I have acquired from an old stash of CDs here I have not heard in years. comming to the fact I have 3.4 G of muzic, but only 2.86 G free space on the iPod now. since "nothing" is on the iPod, somehow I proably would be told I could not because there is not enough FREE space. BUT the iPod as it is will not let me hear the music I already have in there occupying the space. The disk utility says there is no problem with the iPod, but there it shows me no muzic. the blank space must be fine along with the basic whatever mac files are there. "used" according to iTunes there is 34.37 GB in use and 2.86 Free. but I see and hear none of it yet.
