Not sure what happened to it, but my ipod 20g froze. I let it run out of batteries so I could reset it, but when I went to turn it on it sort of made a wizzing sound that stopped after three seconds or so. The machine repeats that sound and flashed the apple symbol, then the "sad ipod" symbol. I was able to get it into disc mode, but my computer does not recognize it and the Ipod updater does not see it either, nor does it show up in itues. I have tried everything on the apple website and nothing seems to work. It "resets" when I hold down the "menu" and "select" buttons but still nothing recognizes it and it just keeps making the whizzing sound (like when it starts playing something just after you turn it on) over and over and over.

Is it totally broken, can I fix it with formatting, is there somewhere that it can be fixed rather than apple which will want to replace the whole thing I am sure???

Thanks,
nehp

Hi Nora,

A sad iPod :-( Sounds like the battery bit the dust. I doubt you need a new iPod, just a new rechargeable battery. Do you have the 3rd generation iPod 20GB? With the dock???????

when it is in disk-mode the battery shows that it is re-charging, and i've not had troubles with it not holding a charge, but if it is the battery and I can just replace it I would be very happy! I am not sure what generation it is, I got it in september of last year and it uses a usb or firewire to plug into the computer and charges there(or fire-wire-cord adaptable wall charger) . How do I go about replacing the battery?

Hi Nora :-)

Here's the link on battery replacement:
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/battery/

Ok... so you charge from your Mac via firewire. Since your iPod is having system problems, ie., flashing apple logo, reset doesn't help, and making that whizzing sound, I would
take it into an Apple Store if you have one close by. Here is a link to see if you have one in your area:
http://www.apple.com/retail/

If you aren't close by an Apple store, you might look in our yellow pages and see if you can find a computer repair that fixes iPods.

One other thing... do you have the most recent software update for your iPod? Also, here is a link to the Apple iPod support page with the FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)... something there might help.

Post back... let me know how it's going!
Carolyn :-)
