Klaire,
The iPod mini does indeed come with the latest version of iTunes. However, the iTunes it comes with is on CD and not on the iPod itself. Which means you don't have to use it!
HOWEVER, you need to understand the following:
iPod mini (Second Generation)
To use iPod mini (Second Generation) with a Macintosh, you must have the following:
* Macintosh computer with USB 2.0 port (Mac OS X 10.2.8 or Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later required) or Macintosh computer with FireWire port (using optional iPod Dock Connector to FireWire cable
* iTunes 4.7 or later. Be sure you have the latest version of iTunes.
* iSync 1.1 and iCal 1.0.1 or later. iSync and iCal are optional for synchronizing contact and calendar information with iPod mini (Second Generation).
So, it looks like you're going to have to upgrade your imac to OS X if you want to use your new iPod mini with it.
How old is this iMac? Which model is it? Do you have the use of a, gulp, PC running windows?
Let me know.
Regards,
Richard

wow,thanks for the superfast reply!
im pretty cluless when it comes to computers,as you may have noticed!i got my mac a few years ago from a guy who said he got it about a week after they first came out.im not sure how to find out what model it is,i got no instrutions with it so everything i do with it is trial and error,i mainly use it for email.its turquoise if that helps! :-D
i think im pretty much screwed really.oh well, osx it is then.didnt want to spend money on it as im looking out for a cheap....*coff* pc...,but it looks like im gonna need the latest version of windows for it anyway if im gonna get the ipod to work on that.
this is getting ruddy expensive just to listen to music on long train journeys!!!

Klaire,
Yes, trying to keep up with computers and what not can be expensive, as you're finding out.
If you're going to install OS X on your iMac then I would recommend you upgrade to Tiger ie, OS X 10.4. Might as well get the latest and greatest. I know which iMac you have now that you've described it. Tiger will run on that iMac albeit not as fast as on a newer iMac. But, if all you want to use it for is email and "tunes" then that should be fine.
