TICKET ARCHIVE -> Ipod Not Mounting ... Sometimes And Hard Drive Also

I have two problems , but they might be related. The first problem is about a hard drive I have that I was trying to mount my ipod through. My ipod wasn't mounting so I tried plugging it into a hard drive I have to chain the fire wire. It didn't work so I restarted my computer in os9 and tried again. Didn't work. Then... the hard drive wouldn't mount anymore. Said it was unrecognizeable and I'd have to eject or initialize. This now happens with the hard drive in both osx and os9. I can't get it to mount. I can see it in disk Utilities but only the first level "111.8 GB Oxford Simi..." not with the name underneath it. So I can't run disk first aid on it. I have Disk Warrior for os9 but it doesn't see the drive either. Can I trick it into seeing the drive? Seems like I pressed a button someone recommended when mounting the drive when had a problem before with this. But the drive is very stable besides that one time a year ago.

Second problem. My ipod doesn't mount... sometimes It crashed a few weeks ago. A guy at the apple store restored it. Then it mounts on my wifes computer but not mine. But it does mount on mine once after it mounts on hers. Then if i disconnect it and reconnect to my wife's old g4 and then back to my laptop ( i have a titanium 400mhz g4) it will mount again... but only once. I try starting comp wth it plugged in and ddoesn't work. Disk utility doesn't see it either.

Make any sense?

Brad,
The 1st thing I would do when a external hard disk device does not mount on a machine, but mounts on another

Unplug all the drives connect to the Mac - unplug the USB/FW cables, but also unplug them from the electrical line
Also unplug the Mac from the electrical line and let it in peace for, ket's say, half an hour

Then, reboot the Mac
Connect the hard drive to the Mac (USB/FW cable), then power on the drive.

I'm not sure at all this helps you with your problem, but this a first step to proceed.

Post back all the things you'll discover when applying this test

Philippe

Hey Phillipe,

Thanks for your response and for getting back so soon.

I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting unplugging turning off and on with all devices. My firewire hard drive won't mount anymore, says it is unreadable and needs to be initialized. Do you think there is a way to save the data? It won't mount on either computer in osx or os9. Os9 did see it once, but then the disk first aid said it couldn't fix it. And since then no computer can recognize it. Do you know the trick for getting DiskWarrior to read it or see it?

Also, I know two separate problems... also... my ipod won't mount on either computer now. Turned both computers on and off with the ipod plugged in and not plugged in while restarting. Does this happen often? Any other ideas? Disk Utility does not see it. I have the newest OS for ipod running on my ipod and I'm running os 10.3.9 on my computer.

Thanks

Brad

About the drive
Yes DiskWarriro is the sole tool being able to repair a damaged drive.
However, booting on 9 and using DW_for_9 must see the drive.
Do you have the possibility to plug the drive to another Mac computer to see if the problem is related to drive itself or to the FW port ?

Phil

Hey Phil,

First iPod questions: It's not first generation it's 3rd gen I think. Has four buttons and a wheel. The one before the new one. I have restored it twice and it won't mount any more so I can't restore it again. Also tried resetting it by holding down the menu button and the play button. It works fine, just doesnt mount.

Drive Question: Other fire wire drives mount fine on my computer so it's not the fire wire port. I can't get the disk warrior in os9 to see it. There's not a trick by plugging it in and out quickly or holding shift while I do this? Seems like a guy in Reykijavik once told me a secret for getting Disk Warrior to see it. If not... any other ideas?

Thanks for your advice.

About drive: hope that the Reykijavik guy will ahve a trick, because, as far as I know, when DW does not see a drive...

About iPod, my daugther's Mini fails to mount after an iTunes crash during updating process; but resetting it forces it to come back to live

I'm so embarassed no having solve your problem. I try to find other information on the Web

Gives me details if you or the Islang guy found a way to solve the problem

The Iceland guy was just telling me about a trick for mounting the drive with Disk Warrior on so it would see it. This was a year or so ago so I forget. I dont remember, but it was like plugging it in or not or holding down a key when plugging it in. It really did the trick , because once Disk Warrior could see the drive it could repair it.

The ipod is having no response. I tried resettign it and also holding down the arrow keys to put it in disk mode but then it just said okay to disconnect .

That's all I know.

Thanks for your help

About the iPod
To see if the unbelievable -logic board fried-, could you charge it through the electrical power line to full.
Let it him play a endless loop.
If the battery drains out in less than 1 hour...gasp

Just let play the song indefintively (loop) until the battery drains out: let it play music for one full day !
Plug it back into the electrical line -not the Mac- to charge the battery upt to full
Then, replug it into the Mac

http://www.ipodbatteryfaq.com/

And when you charge it through the electrical line not the mac ? Could try it ?

I've drained it several times and recharged off wall and through computer. It only lasts 90 min maybe less. This suit you emailed me about... it looks like it's still pending so that's no help. Also, doesn't help with mounting ipod.

Thanks

Brad

Did you find out any secrets about mounting with Disk Warrior. IS it worth getting Disk Warrior for osx?

Thanks

I'm not sure at all that DW OSX will help you in this circumstance: if you boot on OS 9 DW_OS9 (DW 2.x) must see the drive if the drive is still alive.

On the other side DW and techToolPro (www.micromat.com) is the two must-have utility tools for emergency on Macs.

DW2.1 -> upgrade to DW 3.03 costs $39.95 plus $7.95 shipping and handling to all locations (all prices USD).

Does the "DW repaired" external drive mount on your wife's machine ?

About the iPod, I imagine the worst: 90' of playback is ridiculous on an iPod and if the power controller board is fried, it is normal that the iPod cannot charge

All your problems ring as if you have undergone a power outrage (lightning,..)

No power outage and I always plug into a power strip. It all started when my ipod went on blink and I tried to mount it through my hard drive. Then they both went bad.

really sorry, but I run out of ideas on your problem.
I repool the question to see if another tech cannot find a solution

Good luck
