Check to make sure that you do not have the Hold switch in the locked position. If the Hold switch is in the locked position, you will see a lock symbol on the screen. Slide the Hold switch to the unlocked position and check the screen.

If this does not resolve the problem, follow the steps below to reset your iPod.

Connect your iPod to the iPod Power Adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (slide it to Hold and then turn it off again)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears (about 6 to 10 seconds). You may need to repeat this step
If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.

I'm afraid that this has been done multiple times.

If you read the rest of my post you will see the number of things I have done!

The only problem now seems to be the software not recognising I have contacts in my addressbook. Weird!

I think your original post got cut-off, I don't see anywhere where you go into further detail. it only says

This is my original question:

For some reason my lovely ipod photo has gone weird.
First I plugged it in and itunes and finder couldn't find it, though system preferences could connected to usb port. The screen said "do not disconnect" but there was nothing to disconnect.

I tried re-setting, but couldn't. I tried trashing permissions, deleting keft file no go.
I took it the apple re-seller where I bought it. The tech re-set, re-sapped updater and restored, deleting all info (I had backup on my powerbook)

I took it home, re-load all info. First it wouldn't let me update contacts, calendars using in disk mode, but after after afew re-starts etc would do that. But photo tab was missing so no photos.

Tried deleting updater and receipt, downloading updater, but the updater kept saying "plug in ipod"

Took it back to re-seller, another restore. Said I needed to do an archive and install!

Did that, now photo tab is there and everything else works, but won't sync contacts Says there are no contacts in address book!

Any clues?
