I have recently obtained a new iPod (60Gb). I have a Powerbook G4 on wihch I can mount the iPod on the desktop but iTunes refuses to mount the ipod. I have tried the iPod on 2 other macs and all is well. I have reinstalled iTune and he iPod firmware etc... still not change! I am connecting via USB and have connected both directly to both USB ports and also have used a powered USB hub. Is it possible that the problem has something to do with the Powerbook as opposed to the iPos?

Since the iPod mounts to the desktop, it doesn't sound like a hardware problem at all, but rather software.

You say you "reinstalled" the iTunes and iPod software. There are actually two levels of software fix-up on the iPod. The one that's officially named "reinstall" is the lesser step. Beyond that, there's "restore." If you haven't tried "restore," yet, give it a whirl:

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/

If that still doesn't help, there's even yet one more thing to consider: on the iTunes side, you can trash your preferences. Open a Terminal window and type

mv Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes*.plist .

(notice the teensy dot at the end of that line, right after a space)

Restart iTunes (if it was running), and try the iPod again.

The Terminal command I show you moves the preferences out of their normal place into your home directory. I didn't have you throw them away. I'm not sure what-all is in the prefs files. You can assume that it's all stuff you can replace (for instance, the position of the iTunes window the last time it was on screen), but the one thing that worried me a bit is the "authorization" you get from the iTunes Store to play Store stuff on this mac. I don't know if that's in the prefs files or not, but if moving the files aside was no help, and yet you find that you can't play your iTunes music any more, you might move them back:

mv com.apple.iTunes*.plist Library/Preferences/

had a go at this. Moving the iTunes prefs did not impove the situation. When I tried to restore the iPod - the updater indicated that a firewire cable is needed for this iPod and I dont have one. I will get on at the weekend and try re restore again!

Thanks

Ah. Oh. Well, when you have the right cable, you might first just try using it, see if iTunes recognizes it. Maybe nothing but the cable was wrong.
