from your iTunes help files -

"To import a file into iTunes, do one of the following:
Drag a file or folder from the Finder to the iTunes window.

In iTunes, choose File > Add to Library, locate the audio file or folder, and then click Choose."

A video probably needs to be a Quicktime file, or an Mpeg of some kind.
