Description:
Hello -

I purchased an iMac yesterday and am going thru the process of setting it up to replace an older 5215. As there are not Zips yet, I'm using my Powerbook (original G3) as an intermediary since both the iMac and PB support infrared file exchange.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the darn thing to work. Of course, there is a paucity of documentation about this since essentially all the setup info for the iMac is online - I've gone thru the basics that the Mac Help stuff takes you thru and it's still no-go. I have no experience using File Sharing at all and this setup will be solely to move files from my PB to the iMac.

Here's what I've done do far. I've set the Infrared control panel to IrDA on both the iMac and PB, as well as set AppleTalk to IrDA (and made active). I've gone thru the process of setting up File Sharing to select volumes to share (basically, each units HD) with Guest access.

I can open file sharing (both units Infrared cp's report that they are connected to the other). But it is at this point I can't figure out what to do. From the books I have (since none of this is explained in any of the online docs), I'm under the impression that I select AppleShare from the Chooser and select the computer to log into. I guess this is wrong since I'm asked to give an IP address of the server (so this must be more for Local Talk of something).

Does anyone know what the next step is to log into the connected computers? I'm sure this is probably ridiculously simple, but I'm clueless (file-sharing-newbie...).

Any help is appreciated. TIA -

Hi there, I must say I'm an infrared newbie myself, but have done hard wired file sharing many times with my Powerbook (duo 250)... It sounds like your setup is pretty golden and shiny, you just need to pop the icons onto your desktop. Once you've set everything up, in the chooser, click on the AppleShare Icon. In the box on the right, you should see a list of available computers. (from the iMac, you should see the name of your Powerbook as it appears in your Powerbooks File Sharing control panel). Once you double click this name, you will be brought to a login dialogue box. Selecting guest should give you all the access you need (the only thing unavailable will be the PBs trash if there's anything in it). Once you hit OK on the login dialogue you will be brought to a dialog box listing all the available drives on the remote computer with the option (in the form of a checkbox on the right) to have that volume mounted every time you start up. Just select the drive(s) you want to connect to and hit OK. That's it! The icon should appear on your desktop and stay there as long as the Powerbook is in the line-of-sight of the iMac. If you have any problems e-mail me at kevinb@nowonder.com or kevinb@exploremaine.com. Enjoy the iMac!!
