TICKET ARCHIVE -> Irregular Colour (opening With Preview Or With Adobe Reader)
dl33 - Jul 5, 2005 - 12:57 pm
Hi,
I created a document in Adobe InDesign CS, which I later exported as a PDF. However, depending upon with which Application (Preview or Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional) I open this PDF file, the colours are displayed differently. The PDF has a colour profile attached to it.
(If you want to see a screenshot, look at

)
Thanks already, Dominik

Howdy Dominik. Fellow designer here.
Have you exported as PDF/X-1a? That's a great pdf format because it catches errors before letting you output your files. When you view pdfs make sure your view separations is on (advanced/separation preview in Acrobat Pro) and your overprint preview is on. Do you have more plates than CMYK? If so, this could explain color variances.
Which color profile are you using? Are you viewing both docs on the same computer?

I finally was able to look at your HUGE file you posted, he he, and see that you are on the same computer.
I found out Preview is a very basic pdf viewer, even simpler than Reader and with fewer features. I'd venture to guess it doesn't recognize the color profile you're using and thus your image looks different than in Reader or Acrobat Pro:

In other words, don't trust Preview for color.
Let me know if this helps.

If that's it, thanks a lot. However, can you explain to me what PDF/X-1a is and how I export as 'that' from InDesign?
(And next time I will make the file smaller;-)

Hi, I found out myself....
If I export as PDF/X-1a everything looks the same, in both apps. (Look at the screenshot that I gave you earlier, I updated it.)
Thanks a lot...

yep, seems like the best explanation.
When you export from InDesign, choose "PDF/X1-a" from the Export PDF/Presets menu.

Glad I could help!

Just curious: you said I was helpful but wouldn't ask me for help again. Any reason?

No, sorry... A day later I recognised that I misread the question, since I am also a volunteer... (I got feedback and then read everything again...)
If you ever encounter one of my questions again, I would be glad if you find a solution for me...

Oh, okay. (sheepish grin)
