Hi there
Am running 10.4.6 on my Mac Mini rev (1.25 ghz) & am concerned about the followng report from Disk Utility which I cannot change even when starting up from the CD & running the repair disk command.
Naturally have repaired permissions.
What is odd is that everything seems to run fine, so before I endure unneccesary pain I wanted to ask if anyone had any ideas?
This is the report I get:
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
%)
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect data
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
be repaired.",1)
Macintosh HD
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
Many thanks

Hello David,
Before we delve deeper into this issue when you run Disk Utility, have you tried actually using the Repair button or is this the report from the Verify button??????? It looks to me that this is just a Verification of the problem.

Hi Carolyn
Yes have done it properly - only couldn't save the report when running Disk utility from the install disk so ran it this way to recreate the report for you guys to look at.
Thanks
david

Ok David!
Now, if it were me, I would run DiskWarrior by:
www.alsoft.com
DiskWarrior can go in and rebuild the directory and fix errors on the drive. Or, you can take it in for repairs. Even though everything seem to fun fine, anytime Disk Utiltiy reports errors it's time right then to nip in the bud before it causes further damage to the drive.
One more thing. When you ran DU from the system CD, did you by chance after you DU give you this report, did you select the manufacturer's drive in the same panel, just above where it says: MacintoshHD? After running DU to Verify for the report, highlight the manufacturer (example my iBook's drive is made by Fujitso.) When you highlight that look at the bottom of the DUtility window. Where it says: SMART Status: Does it say: Verified ??? If it doesn't, your Mini defintely needs repair for certain.
I've used DiskWarrior on my Macs and it has saved me countless trip to the Apple Store!
Regards,
Carolyn :-)

Thanks carolyn
yes the manufacturers disk shows as SMART verified - is still under warranty so do you think i should take it in?
Diskwarrior loks excellent but is an additonal expense which should be covered by warranty.

HI David,
You make my job easy when I can communicate so quickly with you... thank you!
Whew.. it says SMART verified. That's a very good sign ...
Now since your Mini is under warranty, I would defintely take it in for repairs. Why not reinstall first? Because it could make things worse and since Apple is responsible at this point from warranty coverage I would have them do the repair. It's their job! I know it's a pain to be without your Mac, but it's the right thing to do. And at some point in the future when your warranty has expired, then do try and get DiskWarrior. It rocks!

Hi Carolyn
I took it in & all they did was reinstall!
Said they don't get into Disk Recovery.
Fuortunately it sorted the problem: damaged directory - not the disk itself.
now all I have to do is restore all the data!
thanks again for your help

Awesome David! I'm so glad to hear that..... do try and get DiskWarrior though... at some point all drives need repair and DW can save you a ton of money after a warranty expires.
Take care and I'm glad your Mac Mini is happy again.
