TICKET ARCHIVE -> Is VNC Possible Without a Private IP Address?

I would like to use VNC to remotely connect to my father's Mac in Australia from my Mac here in Japan. However, I don't know how to set up the host/server and other settings. There seems to be a fundamental stumbling block in connecting our computers because we both only have the public IP addresses of our ISPs and don't have our own private IP addresses.

I can get as far as entering the external IP address of my father's ISP but I can’t reach his computer. My father can type in the IP address of Tokyu Cable (my provider in Tokyo) at 219.110.29.173, but he can't get to my specific computer amongst the tens of thousands of computers serviced by Tokyu Cable at that IP address.

If anyone could help out with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Andrew

Get a free domain name at http://dyndns.org
Find the DynDNS Updater 1.2 for OSX at http://download.com and install. Enter your account info from Dyndns into the dns updater.
Now you will have your personal adress regardless of what adress Tokyu Cable gives you. Use that personal adress in VNC viewer. Remeber port 9100!
