I had a problem with com.apple.syncservices and iCal 2.0.3 crashing which I cleared up by first creating then logging on as another administrator in order to test the problem. There was none, so I restored the backup under this admin then copied the entire folder back to my "real" account. I still get some delay in doing the simplest things in iCal (which was the precursor to the crashing problem), but at least it stays available. I read a post from May 26 which included re-installing iSync 2.2. But I can't find a way to download 2.2; even VersionTracker, while listing 2.2, actually downloads 2.1.
Might that be because there have been a lot of problems with 2.2? Is it OK to use 2.1 with 10.4.6?

The current version of iSync is 2.3. Have you run Software Update lately? 10.4.7 is out, too.

Yes, six days ago I saved the 10.4.7 combo disk image, but I have a lot of work I've got to get knocked out and don't want to venture into whatever vagaries it might introduce until I get it done. It's only prudent to expect that after upgrading there would be one or another thing that would necessitate my stopping the work. This current heavy workload is why iCal's constant crashing was a problem. I'd seen a suggestion at this site (Trash that preference file again, along with iSync. Trash the SyncServices folder in user>library>applicatiob support, leave in the trash, restart and reinstall iSync and try it ), and the person with the problem said it solved his similar problem. This is why I was looking for a replacement 2.2. Since the only way I could find to do it was via 10.4.6 install (and the download of 2.1 via VersionTracker would not install correctly), I just opened the diskimage of 10.4.5 and copied 2.1 to my working startup. I also can't find a download source for 2.3, either. "Everybody" keeps saying it's available, but not where, and with no mention of the apparent limitation that you have to install 10.4.7

iSync updates may only be available by software update. Meanwhile, you're more likely to solve problems with a combo update than create them as you might with a standard delta update. I'm going to reopen your question, though, because I have no more ideas.

Yeah, I became aware of the advisability of using the combo update back at 10.4.3. iCal is still staying open (not crashing), but still also has the pinwheel with every new click.
I just realized I never gave the particulars of my setup:
G3 Desktop (Blue&White/Yosemite) 400MHz 1GB RAM, 70GB Maxtor Internal, 120GB LaCie d2 Firewire, 160GB Iomega USB

Update
I finally got to a point where I could run the 10.4.7 Combo. (Interesting sidelight: I forgot I had iSync 2.1 in the boot drive's Applications folder, and the update didn't change it. I replaced it with the 2.2 I'd stashed on the LaCie, reran the update, and got 2.3)
iCal STILL pinwheels, but now only after about 3-5 clicks; and for about 20-25 seconds as compared with 40-45 seconds with iSynch 2.1 in place (and crashing with 2.2). It hasn't crashed since 7/2.
For the past few days I have taken to watching its (Not Responding) in Activity Monitor, but I haven't yet found anything that I recognize as associated. This is the last section of a sample taken while it was hanging (BTW, it keeps a numerical count of recent hangs):
Sort by top of stack, same collapsed (when >= 5):
mach_msg_trap 150
semaphore_wait_signal_trap 150
select 75
wait4 75
NSPopAutoreleasePool 5
objc_msgSend 5
All I have noted is that these same 7 processes are more or less in this example state when it's hanging.
