I found some wonderful insructions for how to get a Mac PowerBook (I have a 14" G4) to isync with my Sonny Ericsson S700i cell phone. But I'm having a problem completing the instructions. Here's what Darius asked on April 26, 2005:
_______
Apr 26 2005, 6:18am
I can't use iSync with my mobile phone (Sony Ericsson S700i) now as iSync does not see my phone.

Weird thing is Bluetooth Setup can pair my mobile but the checkbox for using iSync with the mobile is greyed out.

Apple has listed my mobile phone as compatible.

Please help as I need to backup my mobile phone entries to my powerbook 12" (2005 model) with 10.3.9 and all latest updates.

Thanks

Darius

Hi,
This has helped quite a few with the same problem:

1. Delete the pairing with your S700i in the 'Bluetooth Preferences' pane
2. Turn bluetooth off on your Powerbook
3. Delete the paring with your PowerBook on your S700i (Connectivity->Bluetooth->My Devices)
4. Turn bluetooth on again
5. Go to the menu Connectivity->Bluetooth->My Devices->New Device on your S700i
6. Your phone will find your PowerBook and ask you to enter a passcode.
7. Enter the passkey on your PowerBook when asked.
8. A new windows pops up asking what services to use with the phone. Make sure you check 'Syncronize your Contacts and Calendar'. You'll probably want to check the other services as well.
9. You are all set and iSync should now work with your phone.

My problem is that I cannot get beyond step 6. What did Thordur mean when he says "enter the passkey on your PowerBook when asked." When my S700i recognizes my computer and asks for a passkey, my computer offers no such passkey to enter. Should a window be popping up on my computer with this code? Or does Thordur mean that I enter the number directly onto my computer and not on the phone? If so, where would I enter this number on the computer? Where is the number? In any case, how do I get from his step 6 to 7?

Many thanks,

Andres

Dear Andres,

My name is Vinko and I will attempt to answer your question.

Please allow me to first answer your immediate question and then offer more insight.

Please ensure that your PowerBook has Bluetooth turned on and it is set to "Discoverable". Now when you go to the Connectivity -> Bluetooth -> My Devices -> New Devices on your S700i, your S700i should be able to find your PowerBook as one of the Bluetooth compatible device. On your S700i you should asked to enter a passkey. You can enter any numeric value here. To make it easy I always enter "0000" (four zeros without quotes). After you done so on your S700i, a dialog should apear on your Mac asking you to enter a passkey, here, on your PowerBook, you should enter the same passkey as you did on your S700i (in my example, this is "0000", four zeros without quotes).

If you're running Mac OS 10.4 this compatibility is fixed. If you are running an earlier version of Mac OS 10.x you may need to also change a iSync system XML file. If you're are indeed running a version of Mac OS X prior to 10.4, then you can get back to me if Thordur's instruction does not work for you.

I hope this helps.

Hi Vinko,

Thanks so much for the response. My Mac can now use iSync to update my address book on my phone. This is great! There was only one more thing I had to toy with, however. I'm using system 10.3.9 and this was perhaps the problem. After adding my compter to my devices on the cell phone and then entering the pass code on both machines (thanks, this worked well) I couldn't get the window on my Mac asking what services I want to use with my phone. I had to toy with the Bluetooth setting and only after having selected "Require Authentication" and deselecting "use Encryption" could I connect and get this servcie window. But now it works and I'm set.

Thanks again,
Andres
