I'm running 10.3.9 on a G4/400. I allowed Software Update to upgrade iTunes to version 4.8. As soon as the installation was complete, I tried to launch iTunes to no avail. The icon sits with its little arrow under it as if it's running but the gui never appears. I thought I'd try to reinstall so I downloaded the dmg from Apple's site but when I run the installer it won't allow installation, informing me there's already a newer version installed(!) I decided to try uninstalling by dragging every itunes file I could find into the trash. Same problem. Either there's a problem with the installer or there are some hidden files telling it a newer iTunes install has taken place. I would be very happy to go back to the previous version but I see no way to do that either.

Leonard,
iTunes does indeed have files hidden.
First, check Home>Library there is an iTunes folder in there.
Next check Home>Library>Preferences. There are three files in there that start with com.apple.iTunes....
Check Hard Drive>Library>documentation for a folder in there.
and Hard Drive>Library>Documentation>Applications
Also - Home>Library>Preferences>By Host
Finally check Hard Drive>Library>Receipts. There may be several iTunes packages in there.
Once you have those in the trash, empty the trash and then go to:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes48.html
to download the full version.

Thanks Cheryl,
There was one file I had missed: the package in the "receipts" folder. Trashing that did allow me to reinstall iTunes 4.8. Unfortunately, the fresh install doesn't run either. I have no idea why but I think my solution will be to collect the older version I have on my office system tomorrow and replace 4.8 with the older version (4.7.? I think). When Apple updates 4.8 (as I'm sure they will) I'll first try it on my office system where it's not really critical. Again, I appreciate your assistance. In fact, since I'll have to uninstall 4.8 again, I now have a list of where to find everything.

Leonard,
Did you use Disk Utility to repair permissions? Do you have an iPod? Disconnect it, then try iTunes.
I tried looking for a full download of 4.7 and it is not available because those updates came through with the system updates.
Now that you have the list, you can find all the components you need to transfer over.

No, I didn't try the Disk Utility. I'll try that.
I also tried to find a 4.7 download but no luck. But, as you say, now that I know what to transfer, I should be able to use my office system copy. Thanks again.

Leonard,
Were you able to copy those iTunes files and get it to work on your G4?

I'm afraid not. Strange. I moved all the files to the trash, replaced them with the working copy from my office system (4.6, I think) and when I tried to launch iTunes, it behaved exactly like 4.8. From the dock it appears to be running, but it never appears and must be forced to quit. So, perhaps it isn't iTunes, per se, but some other component installed with software update. Here, from the software update log, is what was installed prior to the problem:
2005-06-06 21:32:33 -0700: Installed "Java Update for Mac OS X v10.3.9" (1.0)
2005-06-06 21:32:43 -0700: Installed "Security Update 2005-005" (1.0)
2005-06-06 21:33:28 -0700: Installed "iTunes" (4.8.0)
2005-06-06 21:34:56 -0700: Installed "QuickTime" (7.0.1)
As you can see, java, a security update, itunes and quicktime updates. I'm at a complete loss. I just keep hoping the next round of updates will fix it.

Well, I fixed it. It was a conflict with Digidesign's Coreaudio plug-in that came with ProTools 6.4. No, I never would have figured it out myself. I went to Apple's iTunes discussion page and found several people were having the same problem. One of them discovered the conflict. Apparently the latest Coreaudio driver fixes it but unfortunately it's not guaranteed to work with my Protools hardware version. That'll be my next step, to try out the new driver. In the meantime I moved the old driver to a folder on my desktop and, viola, iTunes launches and runs fine.

Leonard,
That is great news. Since I did not know what you had installed on your machine, I would not have made that connection. That is the trouble with email/web support.

Thanks Cheryl,
Yes, that was a very tricky one and, without a full list of apps and drivers (or a personal look at my machine) I don't know how anyone could have made that connection without having the same experience themselves. Of course I looked at the Apple site when I first experienced the problem but I was a little too early and it took a couple days for someone to stumble on to the answer. Apparently, he recognized that those with the problem seemed to be using ProTools with a Digidesign Mbox. I don't use the Mbox but ProTools 6.4 installs the Coreaudio driver (not essential for me) anyway.
Thanks so much for your swift replies.
