I am having a problem with iTunes 6.0.2 on OS X 10.3.9.

Whenever I try to repair disk permissions (running "sudo diskutil repairPermissions /" from the Terminal window) the following text will come up

I deleted iTunes 6.0.2, and was able to repair the disk permissions - but after re-installing iTunes 6.0.2, bingo: exactly the same problem!

Any info/help would be appreciated. (BTW: I only have this issue with iTunes 6.0.2 running on OS X 10.3.9, running it on OS X 10.4.4 does not result in this crash/error.)

Are you running Quicktime 7.0.3 on your 10.3.9 system? If not, that may be the problem, as iTunes 6.0.2 requires QT 7.0.3 and QT 7.0.3 is an update needed if you installed 10.4.4 (and is included in the combo installer for 10.4.4 available on Apple's Apple software download site). You could try running the Quicktime 7.0.3 updater on 10.3.9 and see if it solves your problem.

Thanks a lot for the help!

Should've sort of been obvious - but couldn't see the trees and all that... ;-)

Anyways: I cannot remember the details, but I remember I was pretty p***** off with some of the new features/limitations in QuickTime 7, and therefore didn't install it on my 10.3.9 machine. (I'm still not a 100 % Tiger convert.)

Luckily I kept my iTunes 6.0.1 installer, and will just re-install that version.

I've also had some other funny things happening (like Software Update suggesting I download Safari 1.3.2 and the Security Update 2004-10-27 - both of which are already installed!), so maybe time to let OnyX some serious cleaning of caches and the likes. (fsck and applejack do not report any problems; although I never repair disk permissions with the latter.)

Good plan. You might also try Applejack (which runs in single user mode only) and does a fantastic job to fix a lot of things as well as YASU (Yet Another System Utility). Both are freeware.

For some reason, I've had intermittent problems with Onyx and Cocktail, but that may be because I beta test a lot of Mac OS stuff. Have fun!

Thanks for pointing out the other utilities - had never heard of them.

Only used OnyX five or six times, and never encountered a problem. (Touching wood, since my Macs have oftentimes started going wrong *right after* I'd praised them to some friend/s. No kidding!!!)

OnyX once even fixed this problem for me when my harddrive started stuttering every time after the computer had been on for about an hour; had to force a shutdown every time (with the power on button). Didn't think OnyX would help but gave it a try anyways, and bingo: problem was gone!

Anyways - thanks a gain for your input, and I'll keep you posted how it goes, and/or whether I downgraded to iTunes 6.0.1 (on my OS X 10.3.9). Are you, bttw, a big fan of Tiger? I am still not convinced.

Hi again... Since you helped me out and are probably always interested in things people discover/uncover, I ust wanted to let you know a couple of things...

I had updated my 10.4.3 to 10.4.4 with the "small" Installer (not the Combo that came in at 100 MB+), and that Installer did NOT update Quick Time - Quick Time is still version 7.0.1!

I had already run all the applejack options (except for Permissions Repair) before you suggested it, and I also cleaned out all the Caches with OnyX. I then tried repairing Permissions from the Terminal: same problem (= crash). Also applejack ran into non-stop mode with Permissions Repair.

Since Apple posted a "Downgrader" for Quick Time 7.0.4 to 7.0.1, I will just re-install iTunes 6.0.1, which worked perfectly...

And I will keep doing tests on a friend's machine... ;-) (In fact, I just installed 10.4 for him last night, updated it to 10.4.4 with the 100 MB+ Combo Installer - and Quick Time 7.0.4 was included with it.)

I'll keep you posted in case he will have the sam Permissions Repair problem.
