I have an iMac G5 20" running OSX Tiger

problem: I've installed, reinstalled, redownloaded and reinstalled iTunes. installed an update of quicktime, and can't get my mac system update to work, for some reason it times out (I ran network diagnostics and my connection isn't the problem there)...

My main problem is iTunes. After apparently installing correctly, it gives an error on launch...

"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unkown error has occurred (-50)"

I've got half a computer full of music, this just sucks. If you happen to know what's up with the system update, then that would help too but I NEED my iTunes...

Hello Blake,

Ok, first, have you downloaded and added any music to your iTunes that you DID not purchase from iTunes? That can cause just exactly the problems you are experiencing. Usually when you get an "unknown error has occurred .. etc...", it's because you have a track in your iTunes Library it can't read and that will create installation problems for sure.

Second... try this. You have to Preference files that might be causing part of the problem.

com.apple.itunes.plist and com.apple.softwareupdates.plist

Here is where they are located: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences. Open the Preferences folder and locate those files, drag them to the Trash, empty the Trash. (Don't worry, your iMac will create new Preferences files for you).

Also, run Disk Utility, it's located here: Applications>Utilities. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, then click, "Repair Permissions". Only takes a minute to run. Quit Disk Utility and reboot your iMac.

Try downloading a new iTunes from the Apple site: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Also, get Onyx. It's FREE. It's the greatest little disk utility. Run the Maintenance and Cleaning scripts weekly and it your iMac will keep a stable environment going: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...ties/onyx.html

I hope something I've suggested has helped. If not, post back. And thank you for choosing Macosx.com!!!!

Regards,
Carolyn :-)

If you deleted the com.apple.softwareupdate.plist file, then Software Upddate should work. If it still, "times out" on you.... this one has me puzzled. Ok... how much free space do you have available on your drive? Open any Finder window. At the bottom it will tell you. Anything less 15% free space and just about all software updates or programs will "time out' ... meaning there isn't enough space on the drive to write to. Just as an example, I keep a minimum of 20% free all the time.

Also, you have plenty of RAM so that rules out memory. When you say, "system update" ... you are refering to Software Update? I should make it clear what you meant.... ??? Anytime you need to check for a Software Update, just click the Apple icon in the Menu top of your Desktp and then click, "Software Update" ... if indeed this is what you mean... keep deleting that file com.apple.softwareupdate.plist file and see if that makes a difference.

“A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.

Software Update can’t check for updates because of a network problem.”

Network Diagnostics actually asked me why I want to run it before I ran it. I ran it anyways, and sure enough...

I deleted the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist file about 4 times, sprinkled in some permissions fixes and reboots... nothin... and i've got 180+ GB left on the hard drive surely that isn't it...

while i have you on the horn anyhow... how do i fix java? its awful on my mac? never had any problems with windows... i downloaded the newest java and i think even some updates... is it just not seamless on mac?

I'll probably think of something else by the time these two get fixed but i'll donate something for sure if you can help fix these little stupid things i've always hated about this computer...

and i really appreciate how prompt you've been...

Locate the following files:

com.apple.networkConfig.plist
com.apple.networkutility.plist
com.apple. networkdiagnostics.plist
com.apple.networkconnection.plist

Drag those theo the Trash, empt the Trash. Reboot and try Software Update.

What kind of connection do you have to the internet?

And you are having probs with Java... What browser are you using???? Safari, Firefox ?????? Java works like a charm on Macs... you just have a network problem somewhere that is messing up your updates. Hpefully we can get to the bottom of this.

Ok... trash those .plist files, run Disk Utilty and Repair Permissions. And get back to me to let me know which browser you are using?

Carolyn :-)

And we gladly accept donations!

The only file of the above listed I found was com.apple.networkdiagnostics.plist. I deleted it and the softwareupdate one, repaired permissions, rebooted, and got the same time out error.

The last time it updated was 3/3/06, and I leave my computer on all the time with weekly updates checked as a preference.

I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.9 with a cable connection going through the built in ethernet. The last time I specifically noticed the java being wierd was when i was trying to draft a fantasy football team, and couldn't, but the java console pops up a lot and firefox stalls for a while whenever anything java pops up, but I don't recall the specific instances. I actually can't use Safari with the Comcast cable connection due to some server misconfiguration on Comcast's end.

One more thing that would really make the web easier to use. WMV files used to freeze my browser. I downloaded a WMV plugin for quicktime, and now when I click on one the browser stalls for a while, quicktime pops up but nothing plays. I downloaded windows media player for mac a couple days ago and haven't really looked at the preference settings yet, but if there's a quick fix to that, that'd be nice.

And I this is the last problem I've always wondered about and it may not even be a problem. Stuffit won't open as a program? I've got the express and deluxe versions, and the only way they work is to edit off the file extension. Maybe I'm just spoiled by winzip but shouldn't there be some kind of interface to that program?

I'm pretty sure that's the last of it... sorry... you're still awesome for the itunes fix though
