I recently had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall TIGER (latest update) on a g-4 cube. I keep my pictures and music on an external hard drive due to space limitations on my hard drive on the cube. In order to get the music back to my itunes application on the cube drive, I move it from the external drive. When I do this, a new folder is created on the internal cube drive and the music is copied ot it, taking up valuable space and duplicating the files on my external hard drive. If I erase them all from the internal drive, I must "find" each individual song one by one to replay itunes. Is there one action I can do to have itunes pull the music from the external drive without putting it on the internal drive?
This question is the same for the iphoto...can I use iphoto without having all the pictures copied from the external drifve to the internal drive?
Thank you,
A.

Hi,
If I understood you right this should take care of it.
-launch iTunes>go to Preferences>Advanced>Click on Change and choose your external HD as your iTunes Music folder location. All song added to iTunes should now be stored in your external drive as long as it is mounted when you launch iTunes.
Although not your query, here is another option that you might be interested in.
Depending on how you've added songs to iTunes, your library might include songs that are located anywhere on your computer's hard disk or other media. To organize your files, you can choose to place a copy of all the files in your music library in your iTunes Music folder.
Choose Advanced > Consolidate Library.
Any song files that are located outside the iTunes Music folder remain in their original location; copies of them are placed in your iTunes Music folder.
With all your music in one place, you can more easily copy it to a new computer or back up your music library to an external hard disk or other media.
Bests,
Peter

Apple support warns that
"If you move, delete, rename, or otherwise tamper with files or folders in the iPhoto Library folder, you may be unable to see your pictures in iPhoto."
If there is a way to circumvent this unfortunately I am not aware of it
