Hi,

Under iTunes 7, when I plug in my iPod Nano, select the ipod in the iTunes Library, and select the "Music" tab to choose which playlists I want to sync, the GUI freezes (the program doesn't freeze as I can still quit and press the play, forward and reverse buttons). The GUI doesn't come back until I restart the program.

This did not happen before iTunes 7, using the same iPod. Because the GUI freezes, I can't select which playlists I want to sync, making my iPod rather useless.

I have tried restoring the iPod, to no effect. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, my name is Dan and I think I can help.

FIrst, Download the latest version of iTunes at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Install it, and restart the computer.

Next, open Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility), select your boot drive from the list on the left, and click "Repair Permissions"

Now try to sync the iPod. If it still crashes, let me know and we will go to the next step.

Wow, speedy response!

I repaired disk permission with no effect.

I already have the latest version of iTunes. Were you recommending that I reinstall it?

Thanks again.

Yes, I recommend doing that. That will make sure the installation was successful. Make sure and redownload it as well, because installing again from a potentially corrupted installer is pointless.

Reinstalled, restarted, repaired permissions again, and it still doesn't work.
Interestingly, in iTunes under my iPod, I can click the Summary, Photos and Contacts tab to no ill effect. Only the Music tab ruins things.

Okay, now we try removing the preferences.
Quit iTunes

Move the following files somewhere else, like a folder on your desktop.

1. /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPod.plist
2. /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPod.plist
3. /Users/dmulroy/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist

Open iTunes again, and agree to the license agreement, and click on your iPod.

tell me what it says, BUT PLEASE DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING, as it might make things really difficult.

-Dan

1. Double click your Hard Drive on the Desktop, and go to Library>Preferences find the com.apple.iPod.plist and move it to your desktop or somewhere else easy.

2. Move

It gives a summary of the ipod, the name, the capacity, the sofware version, etc. Nothing different from before.

Whoops, sorry about the text at the end.

Okay, the problem now could be really ugly, like corrupt firwire settings. Download the 10.4.7 updater from apple's site, and run it. This is to iron out any problems that might be related to Delta-Delta Sytem patching. the update can be found here:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...te1047ppc.html

When you restart after the update, hold down the shift key the whole time, until you reach the login screen or the desktop. See if anything changes.

I'm plugging the iPod in through USB. Could firewire settings be causing the problem?

Also, contacts and calendars and all other things sync with the iPod fine. I just can't select which music I want to sync.

One other thing. I can also manage my iPod playlist manually without any trouble. It seems to just be that Music tab that doesn't work.

Thanks again for your help.

USB/Firewire drivers. Corrupt Firewire will probably not gum up things if the iPod is USB, but the USB drivers could be corrupt as well. Did you install the update and restart with Shift?

The installer won't let me install; it says I'm already fully updated and won't allow me to proceed.

The Mac OS X update?
Wow. I have it right here and it will let me.
Strange.
At which stage in the install does it give you the message?

In any case, I'm at a temporary loss, and I am researching solutions. If you want another tech to help you, tell me and I will reopen your ticket. In the meantime, please try this, You never know when something simple like this might help.

I just read what computer you are using, I am really sorry. I recommended you install the PPC update, when you need the Intel update, which can be found here:
