Got a new mac mini..great machine. Firewired all of my g4 suitcase files to the mini. itunes came over but without music library. Trashed that version. Upgraded to 4.9 and am unable to import music library from Home Music library to new version of itunes. I have about 5,000 songs from the old computer....how do I get to play them on my new computer.... or is this dual use of my own music not allowable ? Thanks for your help

Peter2533

PS I have a loaded 30G ipod too which will not sync with the itunes on the new mini

Ah, yes... iTunes and it’s quirkyness at its best.

There are ways to have both machines use a single location for the library however when you go to add or remove songs to or from either you will have to ensure that you duplication the itunes folders on both (easily done with Applescript). The trick is always ensuring that when you play your itunes, the G4 is always loaded as a file server (afp://xx.xx.xx.xx) or windows share (smb://xx.xx.xx.xx) Once that is done, simply ensure that the path to the itunes music folder reads "/" rather than the usual "~/Music/iTunes/". This may mean you must create a centralized location that is not in the Home directory of the G4.

Once you have created a location that you want to use. Change the G4 Music Position to it and use the "Consolidate Library…" option under the "Advanced" menu. It will move all of you music to that location while keeping your original preferences in the settings in your Music folder.

Once finished copying, use BatChmod (search versiontracker.com) and apply the permissions of "Owner: ? ? ?", "Group: "Wheel" ? ? ?", "Other: ? ? ?" and "Enclosed file and folders: ? ?" to ensure that all have access.

On your mini, connect using AFP or SMB and copy the iTunes Library file from the G4 music folder to the mini music folder along with the com.apple.itunes.plist from the G4 ~/library/Preferences to the mini ~/library/Preferences.

Once that is done, launch itunes on your mini and reply back if it works.

Good Luck.

Will this process you desribed so well allow me to use the computers in different locations. They will not be linked. The mini is for my vactaion home. You say that both machines can use a single location for the libraries.....don't the machines need linked in order to do that. (networked).

Thansk for taking the time to help,

I appologize, I though you wanted them to share a library. To make itunes on the mini use the same library on your G4, you can simply drag your entire music from one to the other along with the corrisponding plist from you preferences. Apply the same BatChmod settings and launch it. That should transfere your entire library. To get you iPod working with it, well... there are several tools for ripping iPods out there but to make it see the mini as a host you will need to reset it via itunes and have it delete and re-upload all you music.

Good luck.
